The New James Bond AnnouncedFriday, October 14, 2005 LONDON — Daniel Craig was introduced Friday as the first blond James Bond and only the second Englishman to star as Agent 007 in the movie series. Craig's selection was revealed as he was whisked down the Thames River aboard a military boat to a news conference. Craig replaces Pierce Brosnan in the role of the suave spy in "Casino Royale," due in theaters next year. "I'm speechless," the star said, after posing for photos with producer Barbara Broccoli and director Martin Campbell. "Daniel is a superb actor who has all the qualities needed to bring a contemporary edge to the role," Broccoli and Campbell said in a statement. Producers announced last year that they were seeking a replacement for Brosnan, who has played Bond in the last four films. Craig, 37, is the first blond actor to play agent 007. Relatively unknown outside Britain , he has had a busy career that includes roles in the landmark 1990s British TV drama "Our Friends in the North" and films including "The Mother," "Enduring Love" and "Layer Cake." He played Paul Newman's sinister son in "Road to Perdition," was poet Ted Hughes opposite Gwyneth Paltrow's Sylvia Plath in "Sylvia" and appeared in this year's thriller "The Jacket" with Adrien Brody. Craig is also the tabloids' dream Bond. He once dated headline-grabbing model Kate Moss and has been linked to Sienna Miller, his "Layer Cake" co-star and on-off fiancee of Jude Law. Earlier this year, Craig praised 007 as "an iconographic figure in moviemaking." "I think you'd have to be stupid not to consider something like that," he said, but added that he hadn't given the role "any serious thought." The film's producers tried to keep their decision secret, but Craig's mother told the tabloid Sun newspaper she was "thrilled to bits." Ian Fleming's first Bond novel, originally published in 1953, "Casino Royale" is one of the few Bond adventures not to feature the MI6 gadget-maker Q. It was previously filmed as a 1967 spoof starring Peter Sellers. Before Friday, speculation about the new Bond also included British actors Clive Owen, Ioan Gruffudd, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Gerard Butler and Ewan McGregor, Irishman Colin Farrell and Australians Hugh Jackman, Heath Ledger and Eric Bana.

USA Today Reports:
The new James Bond film will see the superspy shaken from the world of cartoonish sci-fi action and stirred by a woman who changes him forever.
Casino Royale, which begins filming in January with newly named Bond Daniel Craig, will be the first of the 007 movies to reveal the hero's origins, director Martin Campbell says.
"We're going toward a much more realistic Bond, much more From Russia with Love than we've had in the past," says Martin, who also directed 1995's GoldenEye with former Bond Pierce Brosnan.
Campbell's Legend of Zorro opens Friday, and he says he's ready to trade swords for spies.
Casino Royale was first made in 1967 as a spoof of spy movies, with David Niven as Bond. Ian Fleming's first Bond novel, Casino Royale was set during the Cold War and focused on a gambler named Le Chiffre who tries to reclaim a fortune he lost for SMERSH, the Communist secret enforcement unit.
"He has to mount a card game in order to win the money back. Bond is sent in to make sure he doesn't win," Campbell says. The 2006 version of Casino Royale eliminates the Cold War setting.
Bond is teamed with female agent Vesper Lynd, who later helps him recover after he is brutally tortured.
"She's the one who forges him into the Bond that we all know and love," Campbell says. "He certainly falls in love with her, and it does change him forever. It's a genuinely deeper relationship. The film deals much more on a personal level with Bond."
The reason the hero treats subsequent love interests as one-night stands also will be revealed.
"He talks about how it's too boring to have a relationship," Campbell says. "You meet, and it's all exciting, then it starts to fade, and you go through the uncomfortable part of having to get rid of the girl, etc. It's a very interesting observation, given his sort of misogynistic views."
The film also will feature a lot of "embryonic stuff" about why Bond prefers his martini "shaken, not stirred," and why he favors the Aston Martin sports car.
But there will be no gadget-master Q. The story is trying to avoid over-the-top weaponry.
The production will move among the Bahamas, Prague, Italy and London, says Campbell, now going over action sequences with Million Dollar Baby screenwriter Paul Haggis.
Who will play Vesper?
Says Campbell: "We were so wrapped up getting Bond, that's what we have to do now."

Out talking about his small role in "Munich", actor Daniel Craig talked up his role as James Bond in the upcoming "Casino Royale" to MTV, saying "['Crash' writer] Paul Haggis has done a rewrite of the script and has written great dialogue. The lead girl part is fantastic, the characters are all fantastic. It's a Bond film. We're making a Bond movie first and foremost".
The 37-year-old star cites "From Russia With Love" as his favorite series installment, but says 'Casino' is "going to be very different from anything else ... it will have certain elements that will make it a Bond movie". That includes Ian Flemings;s source material - "There's a lot of similarities with the book but yes, of course it's been updated. It has to be. It's a suspension of disbelief that we're renewing Bond, and that this is the first time you see him." Finally, he admitted, "Yes, I could fail miserably, but maybe I can do something that's different and make the franchise last another 30 years -- as opposed to another three".
Meanwhile George Michael has been approached by the makers behind the new James Bond movie to record the theme song reports The Daily Record. A 'friend' of the star told the tabloid: "George is really chuffed that he's been asked to meet up with the guys behind Casino Royale. It's very low key at the moment, but the people behind the movie are very keen to make this work".

Dark Horizons also discovered that Naomi Watts is the latest actress to be linked to the new James Bond film reports website Ananova. Producers were reportedly impressed by her performance in King Kong and want her to star in Casino Royale. Naomi, 37, has already had a phone call from Bond team Eon Productions inviting her to screen test for the role of Russian vixen Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale. Sources say she will likely turn down the role which Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron have also apparently rejected. Reasons range from being typecast to the famous Bond girl curse.

The new James Bond now has his Bond Girl. She’s French actress Eva Green. She’ll star in the new “Casino Royale” as the character of Vesper. Green’s film debut was a couple of years ago in the ultra-steamy movie “The Dreamers.” The director of that NC-17 film had once said Eva Green is “so beautiful it’s indecent.”

Chris Cornell to cut Bond theme for Casino Royale?
According to an interview in a Finnish newspaper, singer songwriter Chris Cornell has revealed he has written the theme song to the 21st James Bond film "Casino Royale" reports MI6.
Cornell will also perform the title track. This would make him the first male lead vocalist to perform a 007 song since A-Ha in 1987 for "The Living Daylights".
He was quoted as saying (translated), "I haven´t seen the new Bond fully, because it is still being edited, but I have seen several clips of it. Absolutely amazing movie. Very different than earlier Bonds."
Songs written by Chris Cornell have been featured in several blockbusters such as "Singles", "Collateral Damage", "Great Expectations" and "True Romance". He was a founding member and lead singer of Sound Garden, and as well as a solo career, now heads up rock band Audioslave.

Lots More Details On 007's "Quantum of Solace"
Loads more details have come out from the press conference yesteray for the upcoming twenty-second James Bond feature entitled "Quantum of Solace".
First off the title, which is drawing a lot of derision but mostly just plain confusion in press circles. Even actor Daniel Craig admits at first he was unsure - "It’s grown on me. I was unsure at first."
Craig says that it refers to his search for closure over Vesper's death and betrayal - "Ian Fleming says that if you don’t have a quantum of solace in your relationship then the relationship is over. It’s that spark in a relationship that if you don’t have you might as well give up" says Craig. He adds that "It ties into the plot, it's not some random title" and that there's also an "element of revenge" too it.
After the change of pace with 'Royale', 'Solace' will return to a more "classical Bond movie. There's a touch of Ken Adam (the production designer behind the giant villain lairs of the early Bond films) and '60s spy movie." Bond himself will be "misbehaving more this time" and going on the offensive, with the 'action quotient' said to be double that of 'Royale'. B-roll video from a British BBC news report below shows off the two scenes witnessed by press yesterday, a brief chat with Craig, and scenes being shot on-set in Pinewood standing in for a Latin American 5-star hotel:
Producer Michael G. Wilson has officially confirmed that neither Miss Moneypenny or Q will be involved because "moments would have to be carved out for them which would not have felt 'organic'." Wilson says they may come back in the future "but only if the story demands it." Producer Barbara Broccoli says that Eva Green won't be cameoing in the film as Vesper - "There are no flashbacks in the film, but she’s certainly on Bond’s mind."
Mathieu Amalric confirms that his villian character Dominic Greene will not have any facial scars or physical deformities like some famed past Bond nemeses. Rather, Greene has ‘the smile of Tony Blair and the crazy eyes of Nicholas Sarkozy’. He was picked because "The director saw something in me that had to do with the devil. That was a compliment."
Judi Dench confirms her 'M' has a much bigger role this time around and thankfully her relationship with Bond will remain 'pretty prickly'. Kurylenko says of her role that she starts out as an opponent of 007 but reluctantly is forced to work together with the secret agent - "James Bond is after revenge, and Camille is after revenge and they have slightly different goals, but in the end they are going to have to collaborate."
Finally today, the official site has launched and revealed a full and in-depth synopsis of the film. Some minor spoilers ahead so beware:
"'Quantum of Solace' continues the high octane adventures of James Bond (Daniel Craig) in 'Casino Royale'. Betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loved, 007 fights the urge to make his latest mission personal. Pursuing his determination to uncover the truth, Bond and M (Judi Dench) interrogate Mr White (Jesper Christensen) who reveals the organisation which blackmailed Vesper is far more complex and dangerous than anyone had imagined.
Forensic intelligence links an MI6 traitor to a bank account in Haiti where a case of mistaken identity introduces Bond to the beautiful but feisty Camille (Olga Kurylenko), a woman who has her own vendetta. Camille leads Bond straight to Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), a ruthless business man and major force within the mysterious organisation.
On a mission that leads him to Austria, Italy and South America, Bond discovers that Greene, conspiring to take total control of one of the world's most important natural resources, is forging a deal with the exiled General Medrano (Joaquin Cosio). Using his associates in the organisation, and manipulating his powerful contacts within the CIA and the British government, Greene promises to overthrow the existing regime in a Latin American country, giving the General control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land.
In a minefield of treachery, murder and deceit, Bond allies with old friends in a battle to uncover the truth. As he gets closer to finding the man responsible for the betrayal of Vesper, 007 must keep one step ahead of the CIA, the terrorists and even M, to unravel Greene's sinister plan and stop his organisation."

Strange "Quantum of Solace" Plans
When it comes to the big event films, simultaneous worldwide releases these days is a must in order to avoid box-office erosion from piracy.
The makers of the upcoming 22nd James Bond film "Quantum of Solace" seemed well aware of that with the film scheduled to debut in practically all international territories over the space of two days (November 5th-7th).
There are notable exceptions - New Zealand has to wait an additional month, whilst South Africa and Australia (one of the biggest TV & movie torrent downloaders in the world) an additional three weeks before they get to see it - so it's expected the film will lose at least several thousand ticket sales in those countries to camcorded versions of 'Solace' leaking online.
Now though the studio may lose a whole lot more than that with word today that the film will go on general release in the UK on October 31st, a full week before the rest of the world reports The Belfast Telegraph.
Variety reports that the film's budget is a whopping $230 million, a figure that easily dwarfs the $140 million that "Casino Royale" cost to make. The first trailer for the film is scheduled to debut on copies of the Will Smith starrer "Hancock" on July 2nd according to AICN.
The Mirror reports that "Quantum of Solace" will feature the longest ever pre-titles sequence for a James Bond film running at nearly half an hour and featuring the likes of a Harrier jump jet, a speed boat and a helicopter fight. Til now the longest pre-titles sequence was the spectacular boat chase down the Thames and through London's streets in 1999's "The World is Not Enough".
The report does sound rather erroneous however, and the much more accurate MI6 says that filming will take place in Italy between the resort towns of Malcesine, Tempesta and Navene for the sequence. What we will actually see is a stunning 200 KPH car chase along the banks of Lake Garda and some stunt driving through a series of tunnels culminating in a huge truck explosion. It's already been confirmed the speed boat chase happens later in the film in scenes set in Bolivia.
Filming on the project leaves Panama and moves to Chile on Monday. Observatorio Paranal, Cobija, Baquedano, and Michilla will all serve as locations for scenes in the feature. Shooting continues in Panama which doubles for Bolivia in the film, and scenes were filmed the other week in Noriega's dilapidated club in Panama City.
A recent interview in Premiere reveals that part of the plot has forensic intelligence linking a traitorous MI6 agent to a bank account in Haiti. When Bond investigates, he first meets the film's main Bond girl - the Ukrainian-Bolivian femme fatale Camille (Olga Kurylenko).

Connery to play Bond Villain?
According to Ace Showbiz, the seemingly retired Sean Connery wouldn't mind coming back to the film franchise that made him famous - James Bond. As usual with Connery though, it's all about the money.
He says "I wouldn't mind coming back as a Bond villain. But I don't think they would pay me enough. They don't pay the money for other parts, only for the Bond character, although that wasn't the case when I was doing it."

"Quantum of Solace" Release Date Quagmire
James Bond fans outside of Europe may find themselves downloading shaky pirated versions rather than visiting the cinema for the next adventure of the British superspy due to release date disparity over the upcoming 007 feature "Quantum of Solace".
The producers of the Bond franchise have set a 48-hour window from November 5th-7th this year to open the film across almost every major international territory. Yet there are notable exceptions, specifically in several of the franchises biggest Western markets which put potential revenue from the series at risk.
News has come down today that 'Solace' has been delayed a week in the United States, as a result the film is now scheduled to open November 14th States-side. Australia and New Zealand have been even further shafted with releases scheduled for November 27th. This means the film will open in the US two weeks after its initial release in the UK and France on October 31st, while Down Under gets it four weeks later.
This seems a very strange move considering that these three major territories, along with South Africa and three South American countries, are the ONLY countries scheduled to get the film after its first November weekend global release when it opens across all of Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and much of South and Central America.
Even with months of preparation and effort spent to combat piracy, a decent quality camcorded copy of "The Dark Knight" still ended up online less than two days after it was first released on the global market. With a film this size, a pirated version will more than likely end up online by the end of the first week of November, effectively cutting into potential audiences in the US and Aussie markets - two countries where viewing of pirated movies are amongst the highest in the world.
In the US, the reason for the delay was the move of "Harry Potter" out of the Thanksgiving slot, giving the film a better chance at the Thanksgiving box-office where Bond is normally situated. It's also put the film in a familiar battle - against an acclaimed Aussie filmmaker. "Casino Royale" opened in 2006 but was beaten to the top spot by George Miller's CG-animated "Happy Feet" featuring the voices of Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman. Now "Solace" is set to compete with several films, most notably Baz Luhrmann's "Australia" featuring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman.
Luhrmann's "Australia" opens in its home territory on November 13th - which may be why Bond has been pushed back two weeks in Oz to clear the path. In the US though, Luhrmann's film is receiving far less buzz and, unlike 'Feet', is expected to be beaten soundly by the Bond film. So not surprisingly, there's already murmurs that "Australia" may get a new release date. More as it develops.
