Metallica - Live DVD on the way
"Encycmet.com visitor Bleixmaster reports: METALLICA will release a two disc DVD in the "Some Kind of Monster" box. These DVDs will include videos from their midwest USA tour that they are on right now. When my freind went down to the Milwaukee 20th August show he saw a Warner Bros film team and asked them what they did there. They said that they were there to film the show for a DVD and that they had filmed all midwest shows before Milwauke on the third leg of 2004 tour, and that they will keep filming all midwest shows at third leg. The guy on the WB team wasn't sure if it was for the SKOM DVD or for a single dvd set, he only knew they filmed it for a DVD release."

METALLLICA frontman James Hetfield has told Launch Radio Networks that they are starting to think about their next project. According to Hetfield, the group has been preparing for each concert in their backstage "jam room," and have started coming up with ideas for new songs. "I'm really excited to do the next record," he said. "I'm also really excited to take some time off and just not have anything on a schedule. Creatively I think things are working really good. We're feeling really good. We're in the jam room coming up with stuff. Creatively, stuff's flowing. It feels so free and open."
Hetfield said he expects METALLICA to take some time off when their tour ends in November, and then reconvene in late spring or early summer of 2005 to start working on the next album.

Here's from the official METALLICA tour site, Metontour.com:
"'Let's cut to the chase, OK!', is what our buddy Lars would start his post with. I'm with ya Lars: * Sweet Amber - first time EVER performed live in front of an audience! * Junglessence - Rob made some killer bass noise tonight too! * Sad But True - with special guest Sully from GODSMACK! * Of Wolf and Man - first time on this leg!
The lucky audience? Lubbock, TX at the last show on this leg of the Madly in Anger with the World tour 2004.
This was an amazing day, from start to finish. When the crew was loading in all the gear in the morning, you could tell that there was something special in the air. Everyone really enjoys being on the road, but to go home for a week or so to recharge the batteries and see their families, is always uplifting.
Then in the afternoon, when the band arrived, you could also feel their spirit being on top, with the guys making jokes and generally being in a great mood. While I was on my way to the dressing room I bumped in to Sully from Godsmack, who was smiling like he just won the lottery, and I guess he kinda did. "Man, I am going to sing Sad But True with fucking METALLICA, that is soo fucking cool", he told me with excitment. A few minutes later, he's in the tuning room with James figuring out which parts each person should sing. It was funny when Sully was reading the lyric sheet for Sad But True, and he goes "What, it is PAIN, I always thought it was PLAGUE. For 13 fucking years, I always thought it was PLAGUE you were singing, HAHA". James looked at him and smiled "You can sing PLAGUE if you want to".
I don't like to repeat myself, or try to brown nose too much, but I must say that the boys did kick about 12 000+ asses tonight. Hearing them pull off Sweet Amber was very cool, the response from the crowd was great. I don't know if we had a younger crowd here tonight, but not too many knew the lyrics to Of Wolf And Man... shame on you Lubbock... maybe you guys were just too tired to sing a long to that one. But I must still say, listening to the complete show, you guys did get a high score that made up for it all.
3 out of 4 METALLICA boys are on their way back to California to spend some time with their families. The fourth guy is going Country.....and you know what, so is your buddy MetOnTour, going Country that is...Speak to you VERY soon..MOT"
Here was METALLICA's setlist from last night: Battery Fuel The Memory Remains Welcome Home (Sanitarium) Frantic Sweet Amber No Leaf Clover St. Anger Sad But True w/ Sully on vocals Creeping Death Fight Fire With Fire -------- I Disappear Nothing Else Matters Master of Puppets One Enter Sandman -------- Of Wolf And Man Seek And Destroy
For those of you keeping count at home, that's 1 KEA, 2 RTL, 3 MOP, 1 AJFA, 4 Black, 0 Load, 2 Reload, 0 Garage, 1 S&M, 3 STA, and I Disappear

METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett recently spoke to the Cleveland Free Times regarding Jason Newsted's departure, the "Some Kind of Monster" documentary, touring and the next studio album which he hopes will be completed by the end of the year. Several excerpts from the interview follow:
On Jason Newsted's departure:
Kirk Hammett: "It was pretty devastating when we lost a band member. We were supposed to be this invincible machine that forged through the land, taking no prisoners. All of a sudden, it opened our eyes to the fact that we weren't invincible. We were prone to all sorts of hidden things. We were prone to things other people were prone to. To me, Jason was my friend. I hung out with him a lot. We didn't want to see him go. But he had been unhappy for a long time. He did what he needed to do to find that happiness again. I guess that didn't include us or METALLICA. We didn't want to see him go, but it was healthy for everyone involved."
On the band's personal crisis during the recording of "St. Anger":
Kirk Hammett: "I definitely thought at the time that the band took precedence over our personal lives, which was pretty unhealthy, especially when we were taking on so much work. In retrospect, I'm glad we survived it. I didn't foresee that it would take the hold it did. I don't think any of us did. The tension was between all of us. The movie tends to focus on James and Lars, but you have to understand, the filmmakers had to make a dramatic story line to make cinematic tension. They focused on that. There was lots of tension."
When asked how METALLICA has continued to fill arenas when many of its contemporaries have been reduced to playing much smaller halls, Kirk admits he doesn't really know:
Kirk Hammett: "I just know that we try to go out there and write the best songs we can and make the best album we can, and we try to play the best shows we possibly can. We approach everything, from interviews to merch, the best we possibly can. I guess it's all paid off over the years. People still come knowing they're going to get a certain quality. METALLICA is a name that's been associated with a certain level of quality. That's all I can attribute it to."

To help create buzz for the "CMT Outlaws" concert special featuring an appearance by METALLICA frontman James Hetfield, CMT (Country Music Television) will target men at bathroom urinals in bars, concert venues, colleges and radio stations with the Wizmark — the world's first and only device of its kind. The deodorizing urinal drain filter cover — featuring a waterproof anti-glare lenticular viewing display, pre-recorded audio and flashing lights — is motion-activated: step up to the urinal and the unit starts flashing, talking and alternating pictures. The units are designed to last more than 10,000 flushes.
"We're always looking for innovative ways of reaching viewers, in this case the male audience," says James Hitchcock, Vice President, Creative and Marketing, CMT. "The new interactive urinal communicator from Wizmark enables CMT to target a very captive and vulnerable audience with our humorous pre-recorded message — recorded by a woman — that commands, 'Don't miss 'Outlaws' on CMT. You seem to miss everything else!'"

My dad and I checked out the show last night at the MCI Center. The stage was set up "in the round" similar to the Load tour in '97. We were on the floor in one of the narrow sections on the side, right up front. Where we were standing the bands walked right past us to get to the stage. That was pretty cool.
Godsmack was technically the opening act, but you wouldn't have known it from the crowd reaction and their stage show, which included pyro. They mostly stuck to the hits during their hour-long set. The highlight, as always, was the drum battle, now known as "Batalla De Los Tambores." Sully didn't have too much to say other than thanking Metallica and getting the lazy people who were sitting down to stand up.
GODSMACK SET LIST Straight Out Of Line Awake Faceless Bad Religion Mistakes Keep Away Voodoo Batalla De Los Tambores Whatever I Stand Alone
After a break of about 40 minutes, "The Ecstasy of the Gold" hit and James, Kirk, Robert and Lars walked right past me, took the stage and tore into "Blackened." They played a great set list, mixing longtime staples with some songs they rarely play. After "The God That Failed," Lars said they hadn't played it in 10 years. They played only one song from St. Anger and just one from Load/Reload. I believe the Black Album was represented the most (five songs). I think Metallica plays to a large crowd better than any band I've ever seen. Lars' drums were slowly moved around the stage, and the other three guys were constantly running around. At least one of them was almost always 15 to 20 feet away. I'm not sure where this performance ranks with the four other Metallica shows I've seen, but it was a great concert. Metallica and Godsmack is an amazing combo.

A brand new VH1 special, entitled "When Metallica Ruled The World", is scheduled to premiere on Thursday, March 31 at 10:00 p.m.
"When Metallica Ruled the World" tells the tale of the world's most dangerous band through the people who lived it. It brings you inside the nearly three decades of dramatic success, drunken debauchery and tragic setbacks that have made METALLICA one of rock and roll's greatest stories.
Interviews include:
James Hetfield - Lead Singer Lars Ulrich - Drummer Kirk Hammett - Lead Guitarist Robert Trujillo - Bassist Bob Rock - Producer Jason Newsted - Former Bassist Sully Erna - GODSMACK, Lead Singer Scott Ian - ANTHRAX, Guitarist Jim Breuer - Comedian Joe Berlinger - Co-Director, "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster"
According to a posting on the VH1 web site, "When Metallica Ruled the World" is a one-hour-long documentary that will take the viewer through the band's tumultuous 24-year history and give them the real story behind the group's recent ups and downs, including James Hetfield's battle with alcohol, Jason Newsted's resignation, and the band's subsequent journey into therapy.
The show begins in 1981 when drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield meet each other through "Musician Wanted" ads in a local Los Angeles paper and start a volatile relationship that will drive the band to the top of the heavy metal world and ultimately to the brink of destruction some twenty years later. In between; METALLICA's hard partying earns them the infamous nickname "ALCOHOLICA", they face the tragic death of bassist Cliff Burton, become a worldwide phenomenon with the 1991 release of the Black Album and enrage music fans across America by taking on music-swapping giant Napster.

METALLICA have finally confirmed that they are working with producer Rick Rubin (SYSTEM OF A DOWN, AUDIOSLAVE, SLAYER, SLIPKNOT) on their new studio album. In a posting on their official web site, METALLICA write, "We just wanted to let our friends know that we have been jamming, writing, just plain messing around and having fun in the studio for the last few weeks. "Oh, and by the way, this up-and-coming producer guy named Rick something-or-other has been coming by the studio every now and again to listen to some of our new stuff and throw his two/three cents in. "Since this Rick dude is new to all of this, we thought it would be a nice gesture to help break him into the music business by asking him to produce our next record. We're very happy he said yes! In other words, we are psyched to share with you that Rick Rubin is producing the next METALLICA album! FUCK YEAH!" METALLICA To Enter Studio In July; No U.S. Dates This SummerSources close to METALLICA have told Launch that the band will not play any U.S. shows this summer, despite speculation that the group would either headline Ozzfest or mount its own stadium tour. While METALLICA is playing three concerts in South Africa later this month and has a string of European festival appearances lined up for June, its schedule has been empty for the rest of the summer, leading to rumors of some sort of U.S. jaunt. However, the sources say that the band will enter the studio in July with producer Rick Rubin to begin recording its ninth studio album. METALLICA will make its South African debut on March 18, March 21 and March 25 as part of a massive music festival called the Coca-Cola Colab Mix. The band's June festival itinerary includes stops in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and the U.K. METALLICA announced last month that it will record its new album with Rubin, who has worked with SYSTEM OF A DOWN, SLIPKNOT, the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, AUDIOSLAVE and others.

METALLICA To Spend Six Months Writing Before Commencing Recording Process
RollingStone.com is reporting that METALLICA have hunkered down in a San Francisco studio, breaking ground on their ninth studio disc, with producer Rick Rubin (SYSTEM OF A DOWN, AUDIOSLAVE, SLAYER). After opening two shows for the ROLLING STONES last November, 'TALLICA got the itch to stitch together a new album. "We've been writing, jamming, hanging for about two months," drummer Lars Ulrich tells RollingStone.com. "Right now it's me, James [Hetfield] and Rob [Trujillo] — Kirk [Hammett] shows up once in a while." On their last album, "St. Anger", the band wrote and recorded simultaneously; this time, they'll first spend about six months composing brain-rattling riffs and mining recordings of pre-show jams from the "St. Anger" tour for material. The boys are currently booking some one-off summer dates to break the monotony. "Japan, South Africa, Bumfuck — we'll play anywhere," says Lars. "I'll draw the line at bar mitzvahs, but backyard keggers for sure." As previously reported, sources close to METALLICA recently told Launch that the band will not play any U.S. shows this summer, despite speculation that the group would either headline Ozzfest or mount their own stadium tour. While METALLICA are playing three concerts in South Africa later this month and have a string of European festival appearances lined up for June, their schedule has been empty for the rest of the summer, leading to rumors of some sort of U.S. jaunt. According to a posting on METALLICA's official web site, the first five shows from the band's European "Escape From The Studio '06" tour are now available for download via the LiveMetallica.com web site. "Check out Berlin with the first-ever performance of 'The New Song' or maybe Donington, which includes a performance of 'Nothing Else Matters' with Jerry Cantrell [ALICE IN CHAINS] on vocals," the posting adds. "All five shows have the complete 'Master of Puppets' album played live and of course each show has its own unique vibe and local flavor. Look for the rest of the 'Escape from the Studio' European tour by the end of the week." The following METALLICA "Escape From The Studio '06" shows are currently available for download: Jun. 03 - Rock Am Ring Festival - Nurburgring, GER Jun. 04 - Rock Im Park - Nurnberg, GER Jun. 06 – Waldbuhne - Berlin, GER Jun. 08 – Gelredome - Arnhem, NETH Jun. 10 - Download Festival - Donington, UK For more information, visit www.metallica.com. During a June 13 press conference preceding their performance at Tallinn Song Festival Grounds in Estonia, METALLICA's James Hetfield said that the songwriting sessions for the group's forthcoming album are "coming along exactly as [they] should. We're not rushing too much. [We're] taking our time. We want this to be just really good. We have a lot of material, which is better than the other way around. We're going to be [at it] a little while. Rick Rubin is the producer, who's done very amazing things with people. So we're pretty excited about his input." Drummer Lars Ulrich recently told BBC Radio 1 that the band's new album's going to be in stores in the summer or early fall of 2007. "I think we've realized that the creative process works a little slower for us than it used to, and we're OK with that," he said. "It's not a bad thing, unless, of course, you're waiting for a record."

METALLICA Music Now Available On iTunes Music Store, Lars needs new pool
iLounge reports that longtime digital music holdouts METALLICA are now selling their entire back catalog on the iTunes Music Store. Apple is currently offering 10 albums, from the band's debut "Kill 'Em All" to 2004's "Some Kind of Monster" EP. Previously unreleased live tracks have also been added to each of the first four albums as iTunes bonuses.
"Over the last year or so, we have seen an ever-growing number of METALLICA fans using online sites like iTunes to get their music," the band says on their official web site. "So, in continuing with the tradition of offering our albums for sale online (which we've been doing for a few years through various sites), as well as making our live concerts available for download in their entirety (through the LiveMetallica.com site), we are now offering fans the opportunity to obtain our songs individually."
METALLICA was involved in a high-profile legal battle with the original Napster and several universities over its music being shared using the Napster network. In addition, the band was not on board for the launch of the iTunes Music Store in 2003, refusing to sell their songs individually. A spokesman for METALLICA's management company said at the time that the band "would rather not contribute to the demise of the album format."

A high-quality video clip of METALLICA performing an as-yet-untitled new song during their headlining appearance at the Gelredome in Arnhem, Holland on June 8, 2006 as part of their recently completed "Escape From The Studio '06" European tour has been posted online at YouTube.com: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwsbUUEOT9gAs was the case with all the other concerts on the band's European tour, METALLICA played their entire 1986 album, "Master of Puppets", during the Arnhem concert, including rarely performed tracks such as "Orion" and "Disposable Heroes". "Master of Puppets" came out in the spring of 1986 and was METALLICA's first gold album and mainstream success. It featured staples of the band's live set such as "Battery", "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" and the title track. It was also the last METALLICA album to feature bassist Cliff Burton, who was killed later that year in a tour bus crash. METALLICA is currently writing material for its ninth studio effort, which is tentatively expected in the summer or early fall of 2007. "I think we've realized that the creative process works a little slower for us than it used to, and we're OK with that," METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich recently told BBC Radio 1. "It's not a bad thing, unless, of course, you're waiting for a record."

"We can confirm that there will be, at some point, a DVD of all the promotional videos METALLICA have made. Word is it will emerge before the end of 2006, but given the nature of these things, let's just say that as details become available, we will let you know via the web."

METALLICA 'Really Revitalized' By Working With RICK RUBIN
Launch Radio Networks reports: METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich says in the new issue of England's Rhythm magazine that working with producer Rick Rubin after spending 15 years and five albums with Bob Rock has "a completely different energy, a whole new vibe." Ulrich told Launch that the band just felt it was time to make a change. "Rick, you know, between the [RED HOT] CHILI PEPPERS and AUDIOSLAVE and SYSTEM [OF A DOWN] and SLIPKNOT and what else, I mean, it's sort of like, okay, I mean, he's the obvious guy. He comes up with some great ideas and has a whole different way of looking at METALLICA than Bob, which is not anything about Bob obviously, but it comes from a very different place and it's really revitalized some different things in us."
METALLICA has been writing songs for its ninth studio album throughout much of the last year. The band will tentatively begin recording sometime this month.
Ulrich recently said that the sound of the new effort will veer away from the controversial, low-fi production on 2003's "St. Anger", which he called "a reaction to 20 years of doing things one way."
The new METALLICA album is expected out by late 2007.

METALLICA To Begin Recording In March
METALLICA has issued the following update:
"Greetings from not-so-sunny Northern California. We know that things have been pretty quiet here in web-land, so we thought we'd throw some shit your way... here goes...
"We are finishing up the last couple weeks of pre-production on the album and... really... seriously...(drum roll)... we're going to start recording on March 12th. We're pretty fuckin' psyched about it and pretty fuckin' psyched to be sharing this experience with Rick [Rubin, producer].
"But wait... there's more. We kinda sorta figured that by the time June rolled around, we would be ready for a break from recording (escape??) and since we had so much fun in Europe last summer, we thought, 'Why not go back for some more fun and games?' We're planning to share the summer love with our friends in some different countries we didn't get to last year... Okay, fuck it, maybe one or two repeats. We haven't quite worked out all the details yet, but we thought that for once we really would be the first site to break a piece of METALLICA news.
"So keep your eyes open for more details in the next few.. the plan right now is to head out in late June and hang out for a couple/three weeks. We might even do a certain festival that we've played 19 times in July that starts with a 'W,' maybe hit a certain band member's home turf... blah, blah, blah.
"It's a start . . . ."

METALLICA's LARS ULRICH: New Album To Arrive Next Spring Sweden's TV4 interviewed METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich earlier today (July 12) approximately two hours before the band's headlining performance at Stadion in Stockholm. When asked about METALLICA's upcoming studio album, which the group has been working on for the past few months, Ulrich replied, "It's the first time in almost 20 years that we're working with a producer other than Bob Rock. We're working with Rick Rubin, who's made records with everybody from the CHILI PEPPERS to JOHNNY CASH to SLIPKNOT to whatever… So we're excited to be working with a different producer. It's interesting, it's stimulating. The stuff that I've heard… [Laughs] … which is pretty much all of it, is very heavy, a little more dynamic than the last record, 'St. Anger', and I think that what he's really trying to do is capture an excitement and capture kind of a moment and trying to get us away from spending too much time thinking about what we're doing so he's trying to get us just to play in the studio. It sounds like it has a lot of energy and a lot of kid of good, energetic moments. But James [Hetfield] is gonna start singing in August and [we'll] do some overdubs. We're gonna spend another couple of months in the fall to finish the overdubs and we should hopefully mix the record by November and have it out in the early spring." See also: "Assholes".

From the "We can't make this stuff up files"... Kirk Hammett Says His Pet Dog Was Penetrated By Next-Door Neighbor
As a child of 11, guitarist Kirk Hammett watched in horror as his pet dog Tippy was penetrated by the guy next door. That's just one of many jaw-dropping facts we learn about ultimate rock monsters METALLICA in the new issue of British magazine Q. Hammett explains: "I went to my neighbor's. The guy took down his pants and started having sex with the dog! I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. When he got up, I just took the dog and left. She was still wagging her tail." Other key revelations include frontman James Hetfield's jealousy over Hammett and drummer Lars Ulrich's massive consumption of cocaine. "I did not like being around them when they were on that stuff," says the singer. "I resented the closeness they had through their drug use." What Hetfield and Ulrich did share, though, was their love of groupies. "Those guys really went for it," recalls bassist Jason Newsted. "Lars would probably be the king as far as that crazy promiscuity goes. Blowjobs under the stage during the bass solo, that kind of stuff." "Hey Nooooooooowwwwwwww!!!"

METALLICA's JAMES HETFIELD Says 'St. Anger' Was A 'Statement' That 'Didn't Work'
Britain's Kerrang! magazine (web site) recently conducted an interview with METALLICA frontman James Hetfield. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:
Kerrang!: You're working [on the new METALLICA album] with Rick Rubin who has a reputation as an "absentee" producer...
James: Oh, I met him once, I bumped into him in a corridor! [Laughs] No, we were well aware of his reputation when we signed up. On "St. Anger", [longtime METALLICA collaborator] Bob Rock did everything — he was producer, engineer, bass player, babysitter, father figure. And Rick is pretty much the opposite; he's not there to babysit. When we first came in, his opening statement was, "I want you guys to impress me; I want you to feel like you're starting out again." He really wants us to get in the mind-set of "Master of Puppets". It's impossible to recreate what we were 20 years ago, that's silly, but we had to get that hunger back.
Kerrang!: And he's impressed so far?
James: Rubin is really good at feeling songs, and he'll tell you straight-up if he doesn't like something. We started with 20 songs and we've whittled it down to 14 since he came in. He won't say "This fucking sucks," but he'll make suggestions and I'm definitely open to that. With "St. Anger", it became so open-minded that it became unfocused. This time around, there's a lot of "Sorry, it's not good enough." We're aiming for excellence.
Kerrang!: With "St Anger", did the democracy you practiced in the studio end up comprimising the album?
James: Definitely. It was very unrealistic. We went from tearing each other's throats out with sarcasm, anger and not speaking to the polar opposite where we'd embrace every stupid idea so as to not hurt anyone's feelings. And that didn't work either!
Kerrang!: It seems weird that you're taking time out to tour when you're on a roll in the studio...
James: Well, hopefully it'll inspire us to take it to another level. You'll listen back to a new song and go, "We were just out there listening to 60,000 people screaming at what they love about METALLICA and I don't think they're gonna scream at this! Also it gets claustrophobic in there — you can be trapped in there not knowing whether people are still out there.
Kerrang!: Have you started to work on the lyrics?
James: I have phrasings and something vocally to at least feel what the song is like. I forgot about "Let's please everyone in the band." Now it's, "This is where my head's at." I think people will identify with it.
Kerrang!: Is there a sense that time is running out for METALLICA and you need to make a defining album again?
James: Well, we have no shortage of ideas and what am I gonna do? I write songs, I play songs and I like doing this. I know we're getting older, there's no point in trying to hide that fact, and we might tour less than we did, but as records go, we just want to make a good record, that's all we ever want to do. I mean, we thought "St. Anger" was going to be amazing, but it turned out to be more of a statement than METALLICA music that we enjoy playing live. It was more of a purge, just getting that shit out of me, as a catalyst for the next chapter of METALLICA.
