Jurassic Park is tight. It is MUCH better than all three movies. In fact, Jurassic park 1 & 2 (the movies) are actually just book 1. Jurassic park 3 has very little to do at all with book 1 or book 2. I would say that if you like science fiction techie/adventure books, Crichton is the shit. Timeline (shitty movie) is an awesome read. The Prey will be a movie in due time, but its a pretty cool techie thriller. Sphere is straight-up freaky. The movie did not do the book justice at all. All in all, if you are out of stuff to read, you could do a LOT worse than to pick up a Crichton Novel.
I have never read Phillip Roth, what kind of books does he write?

I'll have to check that website out. I have always wanted to read Fight Club, as it has been recommended to me several times.

Anne Rice Lashes Back at Criticsfrom www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6116501/ (scroll down) Anne Rice is biting back. The famed author of "The Vampire Chronicles" –—which was turned into a film starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt — is getting chewed up for her latest book by some readers on Amazon.com, so she has posted on Amazon.com a sharp rebuttal to those online critics. Some readers have written scathing reviews of “Blood Canticle,” the final installment in the hugely popular Vampire Chronicle series. Rice not only defends the book, she offers disgruntled readers a refund. More than 200 readers posted reviews, and while some were positive, many were harsh. “My hard-earned $25 would have been better spent on gin, cigarettes, and porn,” wrote one reviewer, who went on to call the book, “whiny, affected, uninspired, and poorly written.” Wrote another: “There are no words to describe how offensive and bad ‘Blood Canticle’ is. Racist, religiously bias, [sic] and sexist.”
“Seldom do I really answer those who criticize my work,” came a lengthy posting in the name of Anne Rice, who she goes on to say she is offended by the “sheer outrageous stupidity of many things you’ve said here.” She then comments that those who have “posted outrageously negative comments here. . . aren’t even reading [her book]. You are projecting your own limitations on it.”
In closing, she gives out her e-mail address, as well as her street address to critics, saying "I’m not a coward about my real name or where I live. And yes, the Chronicles are no more! Thank God!”
Rice couldn’t be reached to confirm if she did, indeed, write the posting.

And now that I am thinking of it, has anyone checked out Jimmy Buffett's new novel, "A Salty Piece Of Land"? It hasn't gotten great reviews, but I am hopeful for an entertaining read.

The revival of the books thread!
If you haven't read Jimmy BUffett's "A Salty Piece of Land", I highly recommend picking it up. It is just one of those novels that is hard to put down, and just seems to take you to other times and other places. It is full of subtle references to his songs and other books, and is just one hell of an entertaining read.

stay tuned to mav himself vs. the world for my review of the best selling "juiced" by jose canseco. there's so much ground to cover that it deserves its own column. needless to say, if he didn't write it, i would have loved to have made it up.

Hell yeah, "The Dirt" is one of the best books I've ever read. I also read "Tommyland," which has some "The Dirt"-like features, but also has many downbeat parts and accounts of being a familyman and whatnot.
I especially look forward to the forthcoming Nikki Sixx book. He arguably has some of the more interesting stories of the bunch.

I'm currently about 1/4 of the way through Dan Brown's "Digital Fortress". It's a techno-thriler about an algorithim that was written to ensure that e-mail could be sent cryptically without chance of being de-coded. It is actually much more exciting than it sounds. Give it a try!!!!!!!!!

Anyone read the "Icewind Dale Trilogy" by R.A. Salvatore? Yes, several times, actually. I recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy, though you'll probably enjoy it more if you read the Dark Elf Trilogy first. It isn't necessay because Icewind Dale was written first. Dark Elf comes first chronologically.

haven't read as much as i'd like out here but the two that i've liked the most were the aforementioned "the dirt" because if they did half the shit they said they did it's maybe the greatest story ever told. also, check out "silent bob speaks" by kevin smith, which i mentioned in one of my other posts but recommend here as a quick funny collection of scribblings from the man who directed "clerks"

I read Flair's book a while back...it was very good, and I feel that he was very open about the buisness. My only wuestion is ho wmuch was truth. Although he certainly seemed quite honest, was he actually completely honest?
