Hank 3 Spews Profanities, Directs Vulgar Hand Gestures At Annual Festival
Angela Lau of the San Diego Union Tribune has issued the following report:
An annual fun-filled fiesta quickly turned into a fiasco Sunday (June 4) when entertainer Hank Williams III [also known as SUPERJOINT RITUAL's bassist] spewed profanities from the stage and encouraged slam dancing that sheriff's deputies tried to stop for fear of massive injuries.
Yesterday, city officials were still recovering from the debacle, which happened at the end of the two-day Fiesta del Sol. Although no one was injured or arrested during the 7 p.m. performance, city officials vowed that in the future they would control the festival's entertainment list.
Those who attended the concert said Hank III veered from his promised country music, playing punk at the end. He directed vulgar hand gestures toward the audience, cursed the city of Solana Beach and used obscenities that were broadcast into the city because the amplifiers at the Fletcher Cove stage faced east toward homes.
Deputy City Manager and Public Safety Director David Ott, who was at the event, said Hank III encouraged 40 to 50 fans to form a mosh pit — in which dancers jostle and shove one another — that deputies feared would lead to injuries. About 10 percent of the packed audience of 3,000 to 4,000 people were children, adding to the concern, Ott and organizers said.
When a security guard escorted a fan from the moshing hot spot and deputies confiscated cans of beer from the crowd, Hank III got angry and the crowd got agitated.
One of his singers jumped into the crowd and some in the crowd tried to jump onto the stage.

DOWN To Tour With HANK WILLIAMS III Next Year?
In a recent interview with GuildGuitars.com, SUPERJOINT RITUAL bassist and acclaimed solo artist Hank Williams III revealed that his solo band will hit the road with DOWN next year. Asked if SUPERJOINT RITUAL was over and done with, Hank replied, "As for now, I always say that SUPERJOINT is in the grave. It might come back; I don't know. But as far as what's going on with Philip [SUPERJOINT RITUAL/ex-PANTERA frontman Philip Anselmo], the new DOWN record is in the process of being made; us and DOWN are gonna tour next year — it could be two weeks, it could be two months; I don't know."
DOWN is the acclaimed New Orleans band featuring Anselmo, CROWBAR frontman Kirk Windstein, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY guitarist/vocalist Pepper Keenan, drummer Jimmy Bower (EYEHATEGOD, SUPERJOINT RITUAL guitarist), and bassist Rex Brown (ex-PANTERA). The group's third album is tentatively expected in early 2007.
DOWN's sophomore album, "Down II", was released in March 2002 on Elektra Records. The band headlined the second stage at the 2002 Ozzfest.

HANK WILLIAMS III To Release 'Damn Right Rebel Proud' In October Hank Williams III (ASSJACK, SUPERJOINT RITUAL, ARSON ANTHEM) will release his sixth album, "Damn Right Rebel Proud", on October 21 via Sidewalk Records. According to a press release, the CD is "filled with a self-described 'Jekyll and Hyde' mix of disturbingly dark stuff and 'good ol' country.'" The first single is the mutated truckers' tune "Long Hauls & Close Calls", for which a video has been shot. III thinks of it as the album's "crossover" track, explaining that "It's got a little bit of the scream for the kids in black and a little bit of the banjo and dobro for the country folks." "Damn Right Rebel Proud" follows the fierce and edgy "Straight to Hell" (2006), which broke all the rules of country music while still managing to honor its traditions. "That was a big one for me, man," III says of "Straight to Hell". "Rock kids that don't listen to country understood it. That record really had an impact." Recorded in Hank III's east Tennessee home with friends over a two-week period, the album's magnum opus is the 10-minute, shitkickin' symphony in three movements "P.F.F." (you can guess what it stands for), which he describes as "a high-energy, get-drunk singalong." He dedicates it to archetypal shock rocker G.G. Allin (certainly a first on a Nashville album), who III understandably views as a spiritual brother in chaos. "The hobo kids, the train-hopping kids, they all love Hank Williams and G.G. Allin," he points out. "And they've bled into our audience." III's crowd is a roiling mix of outsider subcultures, along with working folks and party-down college kids. "Most of the time everybody's gettin' along," he says. "Most of the trouble we've had has been with the security, not the kids. I'm still tryin' to keep one half happy and the other half satisfied by flip-floppin' the shows” between stone country, punk and metal sets. "We're just doin' what we're doin', and people see the realness in that." For more information, visit www.hank3.com.
