Reviews of the first show on this year's Ozzfest are rolling on the message boards at www.zakkwylde.com and www.ozzfest.com. It definitely looks like its going to be a great time. The general consensus seems to be that Priest steals the show. That isn't surprising considering their set is actually 15 minutes longer than the headliner. BLS is playing just five songs, four of which are from The Blessed Hellride, which is cool because they never really toured on that album. Phil is up to his usual tricks, rambling on and on between songs, and he apparently puked on stage. Gotta love him. Superjoint did a signing at the FYE tent, but Zakk did not. Slayer was there, but apparently you can meet them for free at the Jager tent, along with just about all of the second stage bands. One week to go! Every effort will be made to get a camera inside so that this event can be documented on the HISS Army.

Don't try to smuggle a pint of whiskey in. They made me throw mine away, when they found it on Brock. A camera phone should be fairly easy. If worse comes to worse, you could attach it somehow so that it's under your armpit, then keep your arms down as you're going in. Just a thought.

So how early does everyone want to leave Sunday. They still haven't posted the set times at www.ozzfest.com. Gates open at 9 a.m. I want to get there early, if for no other reason than to find out which bands are signing at the FYE tent and, if it's anyone I want to meet, buy whatever you have buy to meet them. I've heard they've been selling out quick. I've also heard the BLS and SJR are alternating so either way there will be someone cool to meet. Basically, I want to leave as early as possible. I'm talking like 7, but I know it isn't up to me alone.

According to the Rock N Roll Experience web site, EVERY TIME I DIE singer Keith Buckley was arrested following the band's Ozzfest 2004 performance at the Nissan Pavilion in Bristow, VA on Sunday (July 18). "Apparently, [Keith] had WAY too much to drink at the Jager tent and at one point was wearing a set of fake boobs with a tank top and the local police arrested [him] for drunk and disorderly conduct, but released [him] in about 30 minutes," reads a posting on the site. "This little event will NOT effect any of the bands shows, they are still scheduled for their 'off-fest' dates and all Ozzfest!"

PONYONE.NET RECEIVES PLUG ON BLABBERMOUTH
Sean Daly of The Washington Post reviewed the Ozzfest 2004 traveling festival when it hit the Nissan Pavilion in Bristow, VA Sunday (July 18).
"With all apologies to the lovable burnout who created this still-mighty bacchanal of 20 beastly bands, lumbering Sasquatchian riffs and a truly sinister food-and-fun midway — featuring a $5-a-try game called 'Kick Me in the [Bleepin'] Head, [Bleeper]!' — it was Halford's recently reunited JUDAS PRIEST and not Ozzy Osbourne's recently reunited BLACK SABBATH that the skin-on-skin Ozzfest crowd was most excited to see," Daly wrote.
"Perhaps that was because the father of stoner rock and MTV's ditsiest dad is downright everywhere these days. Halford, the father of the 1970s New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement, which turned sheer loudness into speedy goodness, hasn't been seen since 1993. That's the year he bitterly parted ways with JUDAS PRIEST after revealing — much to the band's surprise (hahaha) — that he was gay." Read more.

That looks pretty close. Here are a couple differences from the VA show:
Switch "Stoned and Drunk" and "Stillborn" for BLS.
Add "1 Song" before "Ozena" for SJR. "The Alcoholik" was also in there somewhere.
Take out "Sweet Leaf" for Black Sabbath.

Patrick Berkery of Philadelphia's The Inquirer reviewed the Ozzfest 2004 traveling festival when it hit Camden. NJ on Thursday (August 26). An excerpt from his review follows:
"BLACK SABBATH drummer Bill Ward had just delivered the buzz-kill news to the 25,000 members of Ozzfest Nation, some of whom had been at the annual metal-thon all day — enduring such atrocities as LACUNA COIL's bad EVANESCENCE impersonation and the comically ghoulish goth-thrash of DIMMU BORGIR:
"Ozzy Osbourne had bronchitis and would not be fronting SABBATH this evening.
"Ward extended Ozzy's regrets, explained how Halford, the band's 'old mate' from Birmingham, England, would be filling in, and profanely proclaimed several times how SABBATH would play as hard as possible. The swelling chorus of boos, obscene gestures, and flying plastic cups indicated the crowd wasn't having it. Probably because the phrase 'refunds can be obtained at point of purchase' was absent from Ward's spiel.
"But minutes later, the voice of reason arrived via Halford: piercing, steely, and aiming to save the day. The first words: 'Generals gathered in their masses...' Halford — whose reunited PRIEST preceded SABBATH with a galvanizing set — was leading the Sabs on their 1971 warmonger indictment, 'War Pigs'. It was frighteningly pertinent and potent, thanks to Halford's sadistic delivery.
"As SABBATH droned and trudged behind him through the fiendish acid-rock of 'Fairies Wear Boots', the ecologically conscious proto-grunge of 'Into the Void', and the straight-from-the-bowels-of-Hades dirge 'Black Sabbath', Halford (who, in Ozzy fashion, stayed close to the TelePrompTer) proved a more than suitable understudy.
"Unlike with Ozzy, however, his voice rarely wavered in pitch. Most songs were played in a lower tuning to accommodate Osbourne's diminished vocal range, but Halford could have easily handled them in the original key.
"If you closed your eyes, it was SABBATH on its best night in the mid-'70s." Read more.

The U.K.'s Mirror is reporting that OZZY OSBOURNE filmed the video to his Christmas single, a cover of THE BEATLES' "In My Life", on a bench in Battersea Park, London, accompanied by a "grumpy"-looking bulldog.
Ozzy's version of "In My Life" will be included on his upcoming box set, "The Prince of Darkness". The 52-song set, due on February 8, chronicles Ozzy's career via his biggest hits and most memorable collaborations, but the clincher is that the fourth disc of the collection features 10 newly recorded versions of his favorite songs by other artists. This means that Ozzy fans can here the madman's very own renditions of classics by the ROLLING STONES, MOUNTAIN, MOTT THE HOOPLE, KING CRIMSON, and others.
"The Prince of Darkness" box set will be packaged in a weathered, collectable gothic book with new images of Ozzy taken by famed British photographer/artist Sam Taylor Wood. It will be come with a 60-page booklet that contains a complete career overview and rare Ozzy photos.
The first two discs in the set will encompass re-mastered versions of Ozzy's most popular solo smash hits. The third disc (which is entitled "Oddities and Duets") is comprised of some of Ozzy's most unusual collaborations. And the special fourth disc (called "Under Covers") is comprised of newly recorded covers as only Ozzy can deliver.

Ozzy Osbourne recently spoke to Revolver magazine about his four-disc retrospective box set, "Prince of Darkness", and the upcoming 10th anniversary edition of his Ozzfest traveling festival, among other topics. A couple of excerpts from the interview follow:
Revolver: What made you decide to record a covers album at this point in your career?
Ozzy Osbourne: "For many years now, I've thought that it would be great to do some covers, old songs that mean something to me. So anyway, on the Ozzfest in 2003, I was talking to someone from the record company and I said that I've always wanted to do a covers album. So we started making a list of songs, and we narrowed it down. Then I forgot about it.
"Jumping a year forward, Sharon tells me about the box set. I thought, 'A box set of what?' The record company has already raped my back catalog! They can't do it anymore. There's already been 'The Best of Ozzy' and 'The Ozzman Cometh' and all these other fucking things, and they're all just the same fucking album with a different cover. So the box set originally started out as mainly a collection of rarities. Then the record company asked me if I was still into doing the covers album, and Sharon said that it would be something extra for the box set, so people are getting more than the same songs they've heard 50,000 times before."
Revolver: Do you think that by doing cover versions you might prompt people to say you're running out of ideas for your own solo material?
Ozzy Osbourne: "I'm not too bothered if it gets slagged. It's just giving people something different. You can download a lot of the other stuff on the box set from the Internet, anyway. The record company was going to release it with or without the covers album, and I felt embarrassed, to be honest. If I'd insisted on doing a full studio album for the box set, it probably wouldn't have come out until the end of next year. I've done this covers album as a stopgap so people can have something different. It's just me having a bit of fun with some songs that are already proven. There are gonna be two covers albums. There's the one on the box set, which will have some of the songs that will be on the other one, and some that won't."
Revolver: Ozzfest was a huge success again this year, but did you ever worry that your fans would feel excluded by the success of the TV show and your acceptance by the mainstream?
Ozzy Osbourne: "One of my big fears about the Ozzfest after the success of 'The Osbournes' was that I wondered if the audience would think I'm an asshole, or that people would come along expecting to see a Vegas cabaret act, because that's not what I'm about at all! After the accident, this Ozzfest was nowhere near as strenuous, and I did the best I could. But in the end it was great. I'm doing the 10th one next year. I'm stunned by that, to be honest."
Revolver: Will that be with BLACK SABBATH or your solo band?
Ozzy Osbourne: "This is what usually happens: Sharon will ask me whether I want to do it with my own band or SABBATH, and I'll say, 'I'll do it with SABBATH.' And she'll say, 'Are you sure?' I'll say, 'Yeah,' so she'll say, 'Okay, but if you do it with SABBATH then there'll be problems.' So I say, 'Okay, I'll do it with my own band.' And she'll say, 'Are you sure?' By this time, I'm not fucking sure either way! All I know is, I'll be there."
Revolver: If it's your solo band, what will the lineup be?
Ozzy Osbourne: "One big problem I've got is finding a good guitar player to write with. Nobody plays guitar anymore, they just make a noise. There ain't no fucking rock gods, and even the good guitarists are fucking nuts."
Revolver: What about Zakk Wylde?
Ozzy Osbourne: "He's fucking nuts! It depends on a lot of things. He'll probably be with me. I don't know at this point. I really want to find someone to write with, too."
Revolver: Have you held any auditions?
Ozzy Osbourne: "I tried out that Buckethead guy. I met with him and asked him to work with me but only if he got rid of the fucking bucket. So I came back a bit later and he's wearing this green fucking Martian's-hat thing. I said, 'Look, just be yourself!' He told me his name was Brian, so I said that's what I'd call him. He says, 'No one calls me Brian except my mother.' So I said, 'Pretend I'm your mum then!' I haven't even got out of the room and I'm already playing fucking mind games with the guy. What happens if one day he's gone and there's a note saying, 'I've been beamed up?' [Laughs] Don't get me wrong, he's a great player. He plays like a motherfucker!"

Dallas, TX-based A DOZEN FURIES beat out North Carolina's CYNDER (now CYN) in the "Battle for Ozzfest" finale to win a highly coveted tour spot on Ozzfest 2005, plus band gear and enough money to cover all their expenses. In addition, the band were presented with a recording contract from Sanctuary Records, which they are expected to sign before beginning work on their full-length debut.
Formed in late 2003, A DOZEN FURIES have recorded a self-produced EP ("Rip These Stars Down") and have toured extensively.

ContactMusic.com is reporting that OZZY OSBOURNE's spokesman has blasted the pranksters responsible for internet reports claiming the rocker had died — because the rumors have devastated the famous family.
The BLACK SABBATH singer — who's relaxing at his British mansion with his wife Sharon despite yesterday's (Jan. 20) bogus death announcement — has no idea what triggered the story that left fans across the world in shock.
Publicist Jay Morose says, "I have spoken briefly to Sharon and she told me that everything was okay despite what people are hearing. It is totally not true and we have no idea where any of it came from.
"Ozzy and Sharon are back in the UK at the moment enjoying some quiet time together. They are trying to have a bit of rest. I hate it when things like this happen because it's very upsetting for the family."

Launch Radio Networks is reporting that BLACK SABBATH will be back in action this summer. Singer-bassist Glenn Hughes, who's finishing up a new album with SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi, said that Ozzy Osbourne and company will hit both Europe and North America this year, and that he might also be on the bill. "They are doing the, the festival run in Europe, and I believe — if I'm not shooting my foot off here — that they will be playing Ozzfest," he said. "And there's a rumor that Tony and I will be, with our new project, on that same bill, but I can't say that's gonna happen — but you never know."
BLACK SABBATH has already signed on to play Denmark's Roskilde (pronounced Ross-kill-dee) Festival, one of the largest annual music events in Europe. Roskilde, in its 34th year, will take place June 30 through July 3. Last year's festival drew 75,000 fans to hear 150 bands performing on six stages.
Other groups slated to play this year's Roskilde Festival include GREEN DAY and AUDIOSLAVE.
Osbourne is preparing for the March 22 release of "Prince of Darkness", a four-CD box set of material from throughout his career, as well as some newly recorded cover songs.
Besides the project with Iommi, which should be out this summer, Hughes has a solo album called "Soul Mover" that's due next month. It features RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS drummer Chad Smith and ex-JANE'S ADDICTION guitarist Dave Navarro.
