POWERMAN 5000 are in the middle of a U.S. tour aimed at getting fans ready for a new as-yet-untitled album, which will be completed at Mad Oak Studios in frontman Spider One's hometown of Boston, MA during a brief hiatus from the tour after their April 17 show in Revere, MA.
A majority of the album has already been recorded in Los Angeles. The CD will be released later this year on Spider One's Megatronic Records. Joining Spider One, drummer Adrian Ost, and bassist Siggy Siursen on tour and on the forthcoming album are guitarists Terry Corso (formerly with ALIEN ANT FARM) and Johnny Rock (formerly with HALF-COCKED, the first band Spider One signed to Megatronic when it was being distributed by DreamWorks Records), replacing founding member Adam 12, who left the band before the tour started (but will appear on the new album), and Mike "M.33" Tempesta, who left in 2004.
Spider One recently gave the inside scoop about what fans can expect from the new music on the band's web site: "Well, let's just say if you like calculated, bloated HOOBASTANK ballads or radio friendly nu metal or over produced, auto-tuned, cookie cutter rock, then you will hate the new POWERMAN 5000 record. Now, I'm NOT going to say the standard bullshit like, 'This is our heaviest, most brutal record yet.' That's so boring and predictable. Not to mention, not true. I will say that this record is raw and real. My goal on this one is to put together a bunch of songs that are meant to be played live. The kind of songs you could jam on with your friends in a garage band. I don't know, it is what it is. Rock 'n roll, punk rock, metal, whatever...it's PM5K. I'm digging it!!!"

POWERMAN 5000 frontman Spider One recently spoke to the Boston Herald about the group's split with major label Dreamworks and the recording process for their new CD.
Regarding playing clubs, Spider said, "It's where I feel most comfortable. We've sort of run the gamut from doing the smaller clubs in the early days to opening for METALLICA in stadiums. It's a lot of fun playing huge venues, but there's something about that sweaty, 120 degrees, kids right in your face that can't be replaced."
When the bottom fell out of the record industry around the turn of the century, POWERMAN 5000 became just another casualty. Dreamworks — launched as a creative label that was supposed to keep the politics away from the artists — was ultimately folded into the Universal conglomerate. POWERMAN 5000 became a footnote amidst the big-business mergers.
"All I know is we sold them two million records and apparently that wasn't enough," Spider said. "They dissed a bunch of bands that made them a lot of money.
"It's not really a bitter thing because I think it's what had to happen to make the band survive," he added. "If we had made the jump over to the (Universal) family, it would have been a disaster."
"We snuck in there right before everything started to collapse at the major labels,'' Spider said. "We got ourselves a nice hit record out of that. It all was a great experience, but this is a different time. The great thing about music is there really are no rules. Half the battle is always just staying in there and swinging and that's just what we do."
A brand-new POWERMAN 5000 track, entitled "Heroes and Villains", is available for listening on the band's MySpace.com page.
"Heroes and Villains" is scheduled to appear on the group's as-yet-untitled new album, tentatively due in October on frontman Spider One's Megatronic Records. Joining Spider One, drummer Adrian Ost, and bassist Siggy Siursen on tour and on the forthcoming CD are guitarists Terry Corso (formerly with ALIEN ANT FARM) and Johnny Rock (formerly with HALF-COCKED, the first band Spider One signed to Megatronic when it was being distributed by Dreamworks Records), replacing founding member Adam 12, who left the band before the tour started (but will appear on the new album), and Mike "M.33" Tempesta, who left in 2004. More details about the album will be revealed in the coming weeks.

POWERMAN 5000's 'Wild World' Takes Radio By Storm POWERMAN 5000's "Wild World" took radio by storm this week making it the #6 Most Added track at Active Rock radio according to Radio & Records, beating out new songs by AFI, CROSSFADE and LAMB OF GOD. The track comes from the band's highly anticipated "Destroy What You Enjoy" album, their fourth studio release and first for DRT Entertainment, due out August 1. "Wild World" is quickly making its presence felt on various singles charts, including FMQB's "Metal" chart where it's bulleted at #24 and on CMJ's "Loud Rock" chart where it's bulleted at #32. A video for "Wild World" was recently shot in a seedy downtown location in Los Angeles, CA. As described so eloquently on the band's web site, "Shot in a Los Angeles crack house with director Jeff Stewart, the clip is the ultimate anti-'Cribs' statement. Throw in a couple of hookers and some random acts of violence and a masterpiece is born." Look for the clip to hit TV airwaves within the coming weeks. "Destroy What You Enjoy" was produced by Mudrock (AVENGED SEVENFOLD, GODSMACK), who also co-produced POWERMAN 5000's major label debut, "Mega!! Kung Fu Radio", and was recorded at the Hobby Shop in Eagle Rock, CA. The album was mixed by Dave Schiffman (AUDIOSLAVE, JOHNNY CASH, SYSTEM OF A DOWN). AOL Radio is currently spinning "Wild World" on their New Rock First channel and will be hosting a "listening party" of the full album the week of release. On the touring front, POWERMAN 5000 is already in the midst of a U.S. headlining tour, which is set to conclude July 29. They’ll take most of August off before heading out once more starting September 6 in Sioux City, IA. POWERMAN 5000 Frontman Directing Horror Movie
Fangoria.com paid a visit to the set of POWERMAN 5000 frontman-turned-director Spider's untitled horror production last week, and brought back juicy info and pics from the downtown Los Angeles shoot. On the abandoned second story of a particularly decrepit building just off 3rd and Main, Fangoria.com writer Sean Decker dodged rats and the grim detritus of squatters (including used hypodermic needles, giving the set an all-too-realistic flair) while speaking with the director. "We're shooting it like 'Cops' with a darker tone," the spiky-haired Spider — brother of another frontman-turned-director, Rob Zombie — told Fangoria.com. Having recently pitched the idea (which he developed with "30 Days of Night"'s Steve Niles) around town and received an enthusiastic response, Spider was encouraged to go one step further in order to secure a deal. "The best thing to do was to shoot a short scene on my own to prove that the concept can work, so here we are," he said.
A faux reality series, the project revolves around two LAPD officers who are accompanied by a film crew à la COPS; the difference here though is that in addition to the typical problems plaguing the urban sector, zombies, vampires and werewolves are also a known social ill. “They’ve been dealing with the monster problem for the last four years,” Spider says of his alternate reality, “and it has become a public relations nightmare for the police and politicians in an important election year, so a publicity firm is brought in to spin the situation.”
Enter the reality-TV director, “a Hollywood big shot hired to show the public what an exemplary job the cops are doing.” Once he’s embedded with a veteran officer and his rookie partner, egos and agendas quickly flare once the crew hits the streets. “The director tries to manipulate [the police], film them covertly and creatively edit scenes,” Spider explains. “Our veteran cop sees through this Hollywood bullshit, but the rookie wants to be a star. The real question, though, is whether anyone will survive to see the film to completion.”
Understandable, since given the total lack of ambient light and the treacherous surroundings, this writer wonders if he’ll even survive the set visit. The production’s zombie displays some concern as well, his musophobia rearing its head. “You guys haven’t seen any rats in this room, right?” asks actor Flemming Rasmussen (pictured below with SOTA FX head Roy Knyrim and interns/ardent Fango fans Graham Denman and Aaron Eiermann) as he prepares to feast on a bloodied foam torso. “You’re going to a have a screaming zombie if I do!” (At this, Spider points excitedly to a far corner, feigning the sighting of gargantuan vermin, and while Rasmussen laughs good-naturedly at the ruse, he looks behind him all the same).
Though the promo is being shot on a shoestring budget, director of photography Jeff Stewart’s framing and camera movement, coupled with SOTA’s prosthetic and wet work and the passionate performances of actors Joe McMahon and Dave Miner as the cops (the latter is an actual LAPD officer) lend an organic believability on par with the gritty Fox show Spider’s project emulates. Fango leaves impressed, and looks forward to the ordering-up of full-length episodes, given the ornate tapestry the writer/director has already woven for the show.
“This idea goes against the grain of what has become standard horror,” Spider says between takes. “You know—panic in the streets, endless absurd torture or creepy kids with black eyes. What makes this concept most interesting to me is the normalcy of it all; the fact that all of these horrific things have become almost commonplace, and in turn driven everyone involved a little mad. We’re never quite sure who is more dangerous, the cops or the monsters.”

POWERMAN 5000 has issued the following update:
"Well, back from tour now and it was a rollercoaster of a run with some amasing moments!! Special thanks to all the folks in Lubbock, TX for making the last night such a blast...
"Looks like we will be taking an extended break from touring, other than a few shows here and there.
"It's hard to believe that we have basically been on the road since mid-2005 without much of a break! We figure it's time to go away and make you miss us!
"Work continues on new music but the promise of a record in 2007 seems impossible. Though we are cooking up some great stuff for the next release! A return to form, if you will. Weird, loud, electro, rock... we are on a mission to claim our rightful spot as the band that never fits in! HA. I think you all will be pleasantly surprised!!"
