Seattle rock band Pearl Jam announced Wednesday that it will release its eighth studio album — and first since 2002 — in early May. The self-titled CD is also its first release on its new label, J Records. The album's first single, "World Wide Suicide," will be made available to radio stations March 8, and the same day the song will be available as a free download from the band's Web site, www.pearljam.com. Tour dates in support of "Pearl Jam" will be announced later this month, the band said in a news release. Pearl Jam was formed in 1991 and rose to prominence during the Northwest's early 1990s grunge movement. The band has sold nearly 60 million albums worldwide.

PEARL JAM Announces Carbon Portfolio Strategy For 2006 World Tour In an effort to mitigate their own carbon emissions while raising the public's carbon consciousness, PEARL JAM today announced the launch of their 2006 Carbon Portfolio Strategy. Through this Strategy, the band will donate a total of $100,000 to nine organizations doing innovative work around climate change, renewable energy, and the environment. "We established the Carbon Portfolio Strategy in the hopes of creating new models for businesses like ours looking to invest in the future health of our planet and its delicate ecosphere," said Stone Gossard of PEARL JAM. "Our Carbon Portfolio Strategy unites the combined efforts of nine diverse groups all approaching the issue of carbon in distinctive and unique ways. We hope that by highlighting and creating a commons for these groups, we can help to advance a broad and synergistic strategy that encourages preservation of existing ecosystems, restoration of degraded environments, and broad stimulus for clean, renewable energy technologies." Since 2003, PEARL JAM has employed a variety of approaches — including rainforest preservation and the use of pure bio-diesel for their 2006 U.S. tour — to help offset carbon emissions produced by the band's tours and day-to-day business operations. The Carbon Portfolio Strategy builds on these earlier efforts by helping advance clean renewable energy and carbon mitigation. "We are honored to be part of this collaborative effort and would like to express our gratitude for the leadership and passion of all these diverse groups," remarked Gossard. The nine organizations supported by the Carbon Portfolio Strategy are: * American Solar Energy Society * Bonneville Environmental Foundation * Cascade Land Conservancy * Conservation International * EarthCorps * Green Empowerment * Honor the Earth * IslandWood * Washington Clean Energy Initiative While the PEARL JAM Carbon Portfolio Strategy has national and international components, the band's initial focus is on the Pacific Northwest since it is their home. By identifying and supporting leaders in the environmental community, they hope to raise this region's carbon consciousness while also investing in a clean energy future. Part of the band's goal is to encourage Northwest businesses and individuals to invest in these and other leading environmental organizations. Interested businesses and individuals can learn more about these organizations, calculate their own carbon emissions, and become part of the PEARL JAM Carbon Portfolio Strategy by visiting www.pearljam.com/activism. The band encourages people outside the Pacific Northwest to identify and support leaders in their own community leading the charge for clean and renewable energy. In addition, the band hopes that everyone will take a close look at how their daily activities contribute to the increasing amounts of carbon emissions in the air. For several years now, PEARL JAM has been committed to offsetting the carbon output produced by their tours. In 2003, the band joined forces with Conservation International to offset 5,700 tons of CO2 emissions released from trucks, buses, airplane travel, hotel rooms, concert venues — and the estimated one million fans driving to and from the concerts — by creating and managing a new protected area in the rainforest of Makira, Madagascar. Protecting forests, which naturally store carbon, helps prevent the release of nearly a quarter of world's annual the greenhouse gas emissions caused by deforestation and other land-use changes. Additionally, Stone Gossard and his wife Liz Weber spearheaded an effort on the 2004 Vote for Change tour called the "Vote for Change Renewable Energy Project" that raised $77,000 to fund a variety of small-scale renewable energy projects in several of the states the tour traveled through. The DAVE MATTHEWS BAND, BONNIE RAITT, PEARL JAM and Stone Gossard individually donated money to this effort, which was overseen by the Bonneville Environmental Foundation. To date, the Vote for Change Renewable Energy Project has installed four solar photovoltaic power systems in states across the U.S., with four additional systems set for completion by the end of 2006. For more information on these projects, visit www.b-e-f.org/renewables/index.shtm. In addition to the Carbon Portfolio Strategy, PEARL JAM are working to offset carbon emissions from their 2006 U.S. tour by using B100 — pure bio-diesel — in all production trucks on their 2006 U.S. tour and for their buses on leg two of this tour. B100 reduces emissions of carbon monoxide by approximately 50% and carbon dioxide by 78% on a net lifecycle basis. In contrast to fossil fuels, which release new carbon previously sequestered in the earth's crust, the carbon in B100 emissions is recycled from carbon already present in the atmosphere. The ultimate goal in all of these efforts is to get PEARL JAM at 0% net emissions for tours and business operations. PEARL JAM's 2006 worldwide tour is in support of their new, self-titled studio record released May 1 in Europe and May 2 in North America.

PEARL JAM's EDDIE VEDDER Shoots First Solo Video
The Pulse of Radio reports that PEARL JAM frontman Eddie Vedder has shot a video for "Guaranteed", according to Billboard.com. The song, which is nominated for both a Grammy and a Golden Globe Award, is from Vedder's collection of solo tunes that served as the soundtrack for the movie "Into the Wild". The clip will premiere on VH1 and VH1.com at 6 a.m. ET on Monday (January 7). It marks Vedder's first solo appearance in a video and features footage of him performing, interspersed with scenes from the film.
Vedder's footage was shot in three hours by director Marc Rocco.
PEARL JAM has made very few videos in its career, which makes a solo Vedder clip even more of a rarity.
The track is up for a Golden Globe for best original song and a Grammy for best song written for a motion picture.
"Into the Wild", which opened in theatres last fall, was directed by Sean Penn and based on the true story of a young man who left his family behind to live in the Alaskan wilderness.

DO you think Edward Vedder would even do a small club tour?

DO you think Edward Vedder would even do a small club tour? I would by tickets and sell them at inflated prices on eBay! You post an intriguing question there Muthagoose Escobar. I think that if he decided to tour without PJ then he might consider a small club tour, whether it would come to fruition would be another story. Personally I would love to see him at the Hard Rock in Cleveland, the setting would be perfect. Almost like an "Unplugged" atmosphere. And if you did that I would have to perform my specialize jujitsu samurai chop to the back of your neck area.

Pearl Jam Backs Barack Obama
The Pulse of Radio reports that PEARL JAM members Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, Mike McCready and Matt Cameron have posted a song called "Rock Around Barack" at their official web site, PearlJam.com. The track supporting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is a reworking of the '50s classic "Rock Around The Clock". According to Billboard.com, Cameron also played drums on another Obama-centered song, "Fired Up and Ready to Go", which was performed by Seattle's Bergevin Brothers and the Total Experience Gospel Choir. No word on which candidate PEARL JAM singer Eddie Vedder prefers.
UK. newspaper the Guardian has published a breakdown of which musical acts are supporting which candidates in the 2008 presidential race. Also included among Obama's supporters are OK GO, THE GRATEFUL DEAD, Stevie Wonder, the GOO GOO DOLLS, Ne-Yo, Usher, FALL OUT BOY's Pete Wentz, Win Butler of the ARCADE FIRE and Dave Matthews. Obama's Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, can boast of having Madonna, Carly Simon, Tony Bennett, Jon Bon Jovi, Melissa Etheridge, Janet Jackson, 50 Cent and Timbaland in her corner. Among the Republicans, John McCain can count on Burt Bacharach, Mike Huckabee has Ted Nugent behind him, Mitt Romney's got the Osmonds all sewed up and Ron Paul has won the heart and mind of former NIRVANA bassist Krist Novoselic. Some or most of the candidates were likely to face the end of their campaigns after this week's Super Tuesday (February 5) primaries.

Eddie Vedder Heads West For Spring Solo Shows
Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder will embark on his first solo tour this spring, on the heels of his Monkeywrench/J soundtrack to the acclaimed film "Into the Wild." Dates begin April 2 in Vancouver; Liam Finn will open.
Vedder was uncertain about presenting the material live when he spoke to Billboard late last year. "I like the idea. It'll happen when it happens if it happens," he said with a laugh.
But he has since come around to the idea, perhaps encouraged by a well-received performance of "Into the Wild" music at a private party in Los Angeles in November.
"This will be an amazing opportunity for fans to see Eddie Vedder in such intimate settings," RCA Music Group VP or A&R/marketing Matt Shay tells Billboard.com. "Working with Eddie on the music from 'Into the Wild' has been an honor, and the tour will be a true highlight for all of us."
At present, it hasn't been announced whether Vedder will be playing the shows completely on his own or with help from other musicians. Ticket information, including pre-sale access for members of Pearl Jam's Ten Club fan organization, can be found at PearlJam.com.
Vedder's "Into the Wild" soundtrack has sold 243,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The track "Guaranteed" won the Golden Globe for best original song, while "Hard Sun" enjoyed success at radio, peaking at No. 13 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart.
Before Vedder hits the road, Pearl Jam is expected to regroup and start sketching out material for its next studio album. As previously reported, the band will also assemble to co-headline the Bonnaroo festival in mid-June in Manchester, Tenn.
There's other new Vedder music in the offing as well. His track "No More" will serve as the first single from "Body of War: Songs That Inspired an Iraq War Veteran," due March 18 via Sire.
Here are Eddie Vedder's tour dates:
April 2: Vancouver (the Centre) April 5: Santa Cruz, Calif. (Civic Auditorium) April 7: Berkeley, Calif. (Zellerbach Auditorium) April 10: Santa Barbara, Calif. (Arlington Theatre) April 12-13: Los Angeles (Wiltern Theatre) April 15: San Diego (Spreckels Theatre)

PEARL JAM Members Prep For GREEN RIVER Reunion
The Pulse of Radio reports that PEARL JAM bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard are prepping for this weekend's reunion performance with GREEN RIVER, the Seattle-based band in which both musicians got their start. The group, which also features members of MUDHONEY and was one of the earliest influences on the legendary Seattle "grunge" scene, will perform for the first time in almost 21 years on Sunday (July 13) at the 20th anniversary celebration of Sub Pop Records.
Ament told Billboard.com that the band has re-learned two previously unreleased songs called "Leech" and "Baby, Help Me Forget" from its first demo for the occasion. Ament explained, "In a weird way, those are probably some of the best songs we have...At the time, we thought they were way too simple or not challenging enough. But in retrospect, they're really great pop songs. We re-learned those two, but there are five or six songs that never got released."
GREEN RIVER has rehearsed five times in anticipation of the show, and Ament hinted that the group could work together again in the future, saying, "It would be fun to write a couple of new songs with those guys."
Ament and Gossard will join the rest of PEARL JAM on Saturday (July 12) for the taping of the "VH1 Rock Honors" tribute to THE WHO. They'll be joined by FOO FIGHTERS, INCUBUS, THE FLAMING LIPS, TENACIOUS D and THE WHO themselves. PEARL JAM will perform "The Real Me".
In other news, New York's Daily News reported that PEARL JAM singer Eddie Vedder rewarded a fan who found Vedder's girlfriend's cell phone in the back seat of a New York City taxi. The phone, which contained private photos of Vedder, his girlfriend and their family, was discovered last week. After Vedder called the number, the fan immediately returned the phone. Vedder gave him a thank-you letter, an engraved Zippo lighter and a $500 cash reward.
