BLACK LIGHT BURNS Signs With ROSS ROBINSON's New Label
BLACK LIGHT BURNS, the new band featuring former LIMP BIZKIT guitarist Wes Borland, has inked a deal with producer Ross Robinson's new label I Am: Wolfpack. "I'll hopefully have the official release date next week, but it's looking like June," Wes writes on the band's MySpace page. "We're rehearsing now, and will be trying to make it over to Europe for some of the festivals this summer as well as North American touring. It's going to be loud, violent, really wet, and weird to be sure. This has been a REALLY long time coming, and I can't wait to see all of your faces."
The studio version of BLACK LIGHT BURNS consists of Wes Borland (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards), Danny Lohner (formerly of NINE INCH NAILS; producer, occasional guitar, bass, keys, sound design), Josh Freese (NINE INCH NAILS, THE VANDALS, DEVO, A PERFECT CIRCLE; drums and percussion) and Josh Eustis (TELEFON TEL AVIV; keyboards, sound design). WES BORLAND Back On Track With BLACK LIGHT BURNS
Greg Prato of Billboard.com recently spoke to former LIMP BIZKIT guitarist Wes Borland about his new band BLACK LIGHT BURNS. On June 5, BLACK LIGHT BURNS will release its debut, "Cruel Melody", which focuses more on Borland's musical quirks than the heavy rock of LIMP BIZKIT.
"There are remnants of what I used to do, but there are also new things that I've explored that I'm expressing now," Borland tells Billboard.com. "I would compare my previous work as 'knuckleheaded and immature,' and basically sort of really heavy party music. Which is never what I wanted to do. I was really behind [the debut BIZKIT album] 'Three Dollar Bill Y'all', and then because of how chaotic it was, was less happy with the music from there on. This is me 'redirecting'."
Produced by former NINE INCH NAILS member Danny Lohner (who also plays bass), "Cruel Melody" also finds Josh Freese handling drum duties and Josh Eustis playing keyboards, while Borland pulls double duty as lead vocalist. On a forthcoming tour, Borland will be flanked by second guitarist Nick Annis, bassist Sean Fetterman and drummer Marshall Kilpatric (formerly of THE ESOTERIC).

Burning the black light with Wes Borland Though best known as the guitarist of Limp Bizkit, Wes Borland is a man of many talents. He is an accomplished painter and his skills as a versatile musician and songwriter are on full display in his new band, Black Light Burns. The band’s debut, Cruel Melody, produced by Danny Lohner (Nine Inch Nails), draws heavily from Borland’s industrial/goth rock roots. When the band’s recent tour with HORSE the band stopped at the Recher Theatre in Towson, Md., Borland sat down with Greg Maki and Jason Price of Live-Metal.net to discuss Black Light Burns, Limp Bizkit, painting and more. BLACK LIGHT BURNS Working On 'More Guitar-Heavy' New Material
BLACK LIGHT BURNS, the band led by former LIMP BIZKIT guitarist Wes Borland, has commenced work on material for its second album, tentatively due in early 2009.
Commented Borland, "The new BLACK LIGHT BURNS is a lot more guitar-heavy than it is synth-heavy. More riffs and slightly heavier and upbeat for the most part. The feeling tone is a little more fun and weird compared to the darkness of the first album."
He added, "I'm pretty much always writing, so I think [BLACK LIGHT BURNS' debut album, 2007's 'Cruel Melody'] is basically just a snapshot of a single period of time and what I was going through during that time. The album which is being written now picks up where' Mesopotamia' (the last song that was written for 'Cruel Melody'), left off. The new record is at this point about 11 songs which are all in progress, but close to being finished."
"Cruel Melody" was released in June 2007 via producer Ross Robinson's new label I Am: Wolfpack.

BLACK LIGHT BURNS Working On 'Covers' Album
BLACK LIGHT BURNS/ex-LIMP BIZKIT guitarist Wes Borland has issued the following update:
"Plans this year: We [BLACK LIGHT BURNS] started recording a few covers at the end of 2007, and when we finished, we realized that it's super-fun and that we like a lot of songs, so we started to record more and then it hit us. Why not take seven or eight covers, and the two B-sides from 'Cruel Melody' [BLACK LIGHT BURNS' debut album], and a couple of remixes and put it out? No! Let's not just put that out. Let's take that, and pair it with a DVD of fourvideos from 'Cruel Melody' and an hour-plus tour documentary, live footage, a 'making-of' the 'Lie' video, and a bunch of pictures from tour and crap. So we thought about it. It seems like a good idea. We're into it. Do we plan on releasing it soon you ask? Is the atomic weight of cobalt 58.9?
"So that's what we're currently working on my friends. I also hear that we finalized everything with a distribution label for Europe. So we will most likely (FINALLY) be making our way over that way. The next record is coming together right now as well."
Among the covers that are expected to appear on BLACK LIGHT BURNS' upcoming release are "Rid of Me" by PJ HARVEY, "The Art of Self Defense" by JESUS LIZARD, and "Devil Inside" by INXS.

BLACK LIGHT BURNS To Release Two Albums This Year
Former LIMP BIZKIT guitarist Wes Borland has posted the following update on his BLACK LIGHT BURNS project:
"We're mixing the covers album during the last week of February. As soon as we're done with that, we're starting drum tracks on 15 new original songs for album number 2. I'm producing the second BLACK LIGHT BURNS record, so don't be surprised if you hear a lot less keyboard/programming and a lot MORE guitar/bass/drums.
"The new stuff is more aggressive on the whole than 'Cruel Melody' was, with a sound that's similar to the production of the yet to be heard 'Cover Your Heart and The Anvil Pants Odyssey'. That being said, there are still some mellow moments, but they do not hold on for as long as they do on 'Cruel Melody'. The hope is to put the covers/DVD out by June and the next record out by November while getting a few tours in there too. We're working our asses off to make all this happen according to plan."
BLACK LIGHT BURNS' upcoming "covers" album will include the following songs:
PJ HARVEY - "Rid of Me" JESUS LIZARD - "The Art of Self Defense" INXS - "Devil Inside" LOVE AND ROCKETS - "So Alive" SWANS - "I am the Sun" FIONA APPLE - "On the Bound" LARD - "Forkboy" BIGDUMBFACE - "Bleed Red Head on Fire"
Borland previously stated about the CD, "[BLACK LIGHT BURNS] started recording a few covers at the end of 2007, and when we finished, we realized that it's super-fun and that we like a lot of songs, so we started to record more and then it hit us. Why not take seven or eight covers, and the two B-sides from 'Cruel Melody' [BLACK LIGHT BURNS' debut album], and a couple of remixes and put it out? No! Let's not just put that out. BLACK LIGHT BURNS: "Cover Your Heart & The Anvil Pants Odyssey" Album Details Revealed
Former Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland and his band BLACK LIGHT BURNS is preparing for the release of Cover Your Heart & The Anvil Pants Odyssey, a combination CD and DVD package on August 5, 2008 on I Am: Wolfpack/YMA Music Group.
Packed with reinterpreted songs of bands including Duran Duran ("Hungry Like the Wolf"), The Jesus Lizard ("The Art of Self Defense"), Sisters of Mercy ("Lucretia My Reflection") and PJ Harvey ("Rid of Me"), Cover Your Heart is a deconstruction and reconstruction of music that the band has loved and appreciated. "This is a short list of just some of our favorite songs," Wes explains. "It was really a culmination of years of ideas for cover songs and never getting around to doing it. But as soon as the thought of a covers album came about, it was like pulling a cork out of a dam. We had to stick it back in as fast as possible because we were soaked in like four seconds."
A fascinating spread of different textures and sounds, from the rhythmic percussive/guitar aggression of Love & Rockets' "So Alive" to the dark and twisted retelling of Fiona Apple's "On the Bound" to the punk spittle and squelch of Iggy & the Stooges' "Search and Destroy", Cover Your Heart is a content-oriented piece that serves as an ultimate bridge between their 2007 debut Cruel Melody and the new album due in early 2009. "A couple of songs don't stray too far off the path of the originals, but most are tremendously skewed," he says. "It's so much fun to take a song from one of your heroes and mix your own filth into it... you know, really create a Frankenstein's monster of a song. It's the most fun I've ever had making an album." The covers are coupled with, as Wes describes, "seven instrumentals cut from Cruel Melody," adding yet another dimension to the album. The Anvil Pants Odyssey, the DVD component of the package, contains a 100-minute tour documentary "filled with behind-the-scenes footage from BLB touring, Behind The Lie: Making the 'Lie' Music Video, plus three music videos from their debut album ("Lie," "Mesopotamia" and "4 Walls").
In response to the music industry's constantly changing business model, Black Light Burns has decided to take on a different approach to distributing their music. Instead of offering simple physical CDs and digital downloads, they are offering multiple music offerings that include the following tiers:
FREE DOWNLOAD - Instrumentals (seven tracks) with booklet
$5 DOWNLOAD - Entire Cover Your Heart album with booklet
$25 PHYSICAL - Entire Cover Your Heart album with booklet, Entire The Anvil Pants Odyssey DVD, T-shirt and Sticker
$100 PHYSICAL DELUXE EDITION - Entire Cover Your Heart album with booklet, Entire The Anvil Pants Odyssey DVD, Entire Cruel Melody CD, Limited edition and number hard cover autographed book containing 30 Wes Borland art prints (est. size: 10.5" x 13.75") * sizes and print number subject to change*
* prices subject to change *
Spending a bulk of the Summer and Fall in Europe supporting Cruel Melody, the band will also be finishing up the follow-up album that is geared for 2009. "We're in the studio half done with record number two of original songs," he explains. "Maybe that's technically considered record three now. Yikes! The next album is really coming along a lot faster than I thought it would. Everything's written for the most part and it's lush and aggressive and harsh and funny and spacey and sullen and dark and cocky and has a swagger to it that Cruel Melody did not. I'm so happy with it. It sounds like a witch with spurs and a six shooter on a broom in Iraq at night with a fever."
Tracklisting:
01. Forkboy (LARD) 02. So Alive (LOVE AND ROCKETS) 03. Hungry Like The Wolf (DURAN DURAN) 04. Lucretia My Reflection (SISTERS OF MERCY) 05. Rid Of Me (PJ HARVEY) 06. The Art Of Self Defense (JESUS LIZARD) 07. On The Bound (FIONA APPLE) 08. I Am The Sun (SWANS) 09. Blood Red Head On Fire (BIGDUMBFACE) 10. Search And Destroy (IGGY AND THE STOOGES) 11. Drowning Together Dying Alone (unreleased "Cruel Melody" instrumental) 12. Giving In Again (unreleased Cruel Melody instrumental) 13. Failing (unreleased "Cruel Melody" instrumental) 14. Mesopotamia (Assyrian Mix) 15. Lie (Seth Vogt Club Mix)

WES BORLAND On New BLACK LIGHT BURNS: 'It Floors Everything We've Done Up To This Point'
BLACK LIGHT BURNS mainman/ex-LIMP BIZKIT guitarist Wes Borland has issued the following update:
"I know I talk a lot, but we [BLACK LIGHT BURNS] HAVE delivered a debut album and a covers record and a DVD to you since June of 2007, circled the U.S. three times (sorry Europe and Japan, etc. BLB not coming over there is due to how expensive it is, not how much we want to come over. If it was up to us, we'd be on tour everywhere on earth all the time, although, they are switching on the Large Hadron Collider tomorrow and we MAY be swallowed by a black hole. Anyways, not our fault. When there's a big enough demand for us, we'll be there with bells on. If any of you reading this are promoters who want to make this happen, send us mail and we'll discuss.) and are going out commando-style (no tour support) with COMBICHRIST at the top of '09. So, when I say what I'm about to say, I want you to know that I mean it. We're mixing our record and it floors everything we've done up to this point. We might as well have not even made a record before this. I'm so happy, you have no idea. You ain't seen nothin yet. Not a thing, (or as they say in 'A Christmas Story': Not a finger!)."
BLACK LIGHT BURNS recently released "Cover Your Heart and The Anvil Pants Odyssey", a combination CD and DVD package on I Am: Wolfpack/YMA Music Group. Packed with reinterpreted songs of bands including DURAN DURAN ("Hungry Like the Wolf"), THE JESUS LIZARD ("The Art of Self Defense"), SISTERS OF MERCY ("Lucretia My Reflection") and PJ HARVEY ("Rid of Me"), "Cover Your Heart" is a deconstruction and reconstruction of music that the band has loved and appreciated.

Producer ROSS ROBINSON's I AM: WOLFPACK Label 'Throws In The Towel'
According to former LIMP BIZKIT and current MARILYN MANSON guitarist Wes Borland, producer Ross Robinson's (KORN, SLIPKNOT, SEPULTURA, SOULFLY, LIMP BIZKIT) label I Am: Wolfpack has "thrown in the towel: after releasing two albums from Borland's BLACK LIGHT BURNS project — 2007's "Cruel Melody" and this year's "Cover Your Heart And The Anvil Pants Odyssey", a combination CD and DVD package.
BLACK LIGHT BURNS will hit the road in January and February with COMBICHRIST in the U.S. and Canada. According to Borland, "on this tour we will be trying out a lot of new material. That's right. Although there will be songs played off 'Cruel Melody' and 'Cover Your Heart', this tour is going to be primarily used as a proving ground for the new shit. One of the new songs will be released at the beginning of next year during the tour on an upcoming soundtrack (more on that later) and we'll be playing that as well. It's been a long time and this band is far from over. We're all looking forward to hanging out and having a few laughs and drinks with some familiar faces as well! These shows are going to go off!"
