According to Hits Daily Double, NINE INCH NAILS mainman Trent Reznor on Friday (May 27) won a resounding victory over former manager and Nothing partner John Malm in a New York Federal court. The jury awarded Reznor on every single claim in his suit, including fraud and breach of fiduciary duty, adding up to $3 million, but interest calculations could potentially double the amount, leaving Malm looking at the possibility of bankruptcy. Reznor also regains 100 percent control of his trademarks.
In May of 2004, Reznor filed suit against Malm, and his business manager/accountant Richard Szekelyi, for several million dollars he said they owed him. Malm had countered that Reznor owed him more than $2 million in unpaid commissions.
Reznor testified earlier in the month that he had as little as $400,000 in cash in 2003 after hundreds of thousands a dollars annually were lost on unnecessary expenses.
Reznor also contended that Malm duped him into signing a contract that allowed the former manager to collect 20 percent of the singer's gross earnings rather than net earnings.
Malm's lawyer, Alan Hirth, elicited through his questioning of Reznor that the singer was actively involved in many of the band's business dealings but sometimes chose not to read contracts and financial information before signing documents.
NINE INCH NAILS' new album, "With Teeth", debuted at Number One on The Billboard 200 chart in its first week of release.

Launch Radio Networks reports: NINE INCH NAILS may release a new album as early as next year, according to Kerrang! magazine. NIN mainman Trent Reznor told the U.K. publication, "We're already in talks about when we can put it out. 'With Teeth' was finished but my creative cycle isn't, so I'm trying to focus and apply myself to writing while I'm on the road." Although five completed tunes were left off "With Teeth", Reznor said that he wasn't sure if he'd use them on the proposed new disc. "I'll see if they fit with the new stuff," he said. "If so, then great, but I'm not using them like 'Oh, look I'm already halfway done.' They may just show up as B-sides."
"With Teeth", the first album of new NINE INCH NAILS material since 1999's "The Fragile", has sold 579,363 copies since its release on May 3, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The CD sits at Number 70 on the Billboard Top 200 this week.
A video for the band's new single, "Only", has been posted online. The clip was shot by David Fincher, who directed the films "Seven" and "Fight Club".
NINE INCH NAILS will begin a North American tour with QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE on September 16 in San Diego, California.

seeing NIN and Queens of the stone age at Hollywood Bowl would rock. doubt i'll have the money for it but for those who have never seen the Hollywood Bowl, its this pavilion like deal carved into a mountain. if you look at that one photo i took of the city of L.A. you can sort of see it on the right foreground. from that spot you can see right down into it. it's a very cool facility.

MTV.com reports: On August 17 NINE INCH NAILS fans will have an opportunity to score the ultimate collector's item — the ownership rights to Trent Reznor's groundbreaking debut, "Pretty Hate Machine".
Yes, kids — you could own tracks like "Down in It", "Something I Can Never Have" and, of course, "Head Like a Hole", but it's going to cost you millions. The disc is one of several TVT Records titles on the auction block, compliments of Prudential Securities Financial Services. "Pretty Hate Machine" and numerous other recordings from the likes of KMFDM, SISTER MACHINE GUN and GRAVITY KILLS were presented as collateral in 1999 against a $32 million loan the label was approved for. TVT managed to pay back $10 million of that amount, but Prudential took the label to court three years ago, claiming the current home of the YING YANG TWINS defaulted on the loan.
"Pretty Hate Machine" is part of an overall biddable package that also includes the rights to the TELEVISION's "Greatest Hits" compilations and the "Mortal Kombat" movie soundtracks. In addition, the highest bidder will be able to collect a percentage on future sales of NINE INCH NAILS' other TVT-related releases, including "Broken", "Fixed", "The Downward Spiral" and "Further Down the Spiral".

Knowing that Treant Reznor is based out for New Orleans (as is Nothing Studios) I was curious as to what he had to say about Hurricane Katrina...
Reznor writes, "I'm truly at a loss for words right now. To see a place you love and have spent a good portion of your life in destroyed...is overwhelming. My heart goes out to everyone involved in this. Please help if you can. I'll have more to say when this sinks in." He added elsewhere a list of news links that he feels "are worth a look. Disbelief and sadness are evolving into outrage."

As this year's Voodoo Music Experience hones in on a new city (soon to be announced), Trent Reznor of NINE INCH NAILS — one of the headliners for the October 29-30 event — has reinforced his commitment to the event, a New Orleans tradition for the past six years.
The ambition of this year's event has changed, as the Voodoo Music Experience and the Entertainment Industry Foundation have partnered to raise critically needed funds for those affected by Hurricane Katrina.
Reznor, a former New Orleans resident who had maintained a recording studio in the city, stated today, "It means a lot to me that the Voodoo Music Experience is continuing on and I look forward to being a part of this amazing New Orleans tradition. It's great that other cities have opened their doors to this year's event, and the New Orleans spirit will definitely remain in the air — that's something the floods cannot wash away. We are going to be part of the rebuilding process and we are asking the entire music community to join us."
Stephen Rehage, founder and independent producer of the annual Voodoo Music Experience says, "I'm thankful to Trent for remaining committed to us as we transition this year's event. As a former New Orleans resident, he understands the importance of rebuilding the local music community. Our goals are the same in that we both seek to bring our hometown of New Orleans back to life."

NINE INCH NAILS have postponed their previously scheduled September 30 performance at the Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, California due to ongoing concerns over drummer Jerome Dillon's health. "Dillon is returning to Los Angeles immediately to undergo tests for problems related to a heart condition discovered earlier this month while on tour," reads a posting on the group's web site. "The rescheduled date will be November 19th at the same venue. As of press time, no other dates are being rescheduled. Replacement drummer information will be forthcoming."
In a separate posting on NIN.com, NINE INCH NAILS mainman Trent Reznor addressed the rather shameless speculation on various message boards surrounding the cause of Jerome's health condition.
"Jerome Dillon does not have a drinking or drug problem," Trent writes on the site. "His illness is not the result of abuse, nor are there any purposefully vague statements about what's really going on with him. I am sure he is as frustrated and upset with the situation as everybody else. This is not his fault.
"Next, I don't spend that much backstage and offstage time with the band, because their agenda is different from my own. They occasionally drink and party — I don't. When I was leaving the venue last night and found out the news about Jerome after everyone else — I was in a separate dressing room down the hall. Make sense?
"Jerome is a great drummer and a great guy. We all wish him the best and hope to see him behind the drums again soon. At the present time, his performing live with us places him in a potentially very harmful situation."
In a recent interview with the San Diego Reader, NIN manager Jim Guirenot talked in about the cause of Dillon's illness and the cancellation of the group's San Diego show earlier this month.
"Trent is sober," said Guirenot. "He wouldn't have anyone doing drugs on his team. Jerome is not a drug taker. He's the one guy in the band who ends up in the gym with Trent."
"Everyone was overworked," said Guirenot. "And drummers tend to work harder, anyway.... Everyone [backstage] thought he was having a heart attack."

According to MJI Interactive, Jerome Dillon was back in NINE INCH NAILS' lineup Saturday night (Oct. 1) in Los Angeles after the band was forced to postpone its Friday show in Oakland, Calif., because of the drummer's struggle with a heart condition. A PERFECT CIRCLE stickman Josh Freese had been recruited to fill in if Dillon couldn't perform. Meanwhile, the Oakland show has been rescheduled for Nov. 19.
The tour's Sept. 16 opener in San Diego was cut short after Dillon collapsed onstage. The following night's performance in Tucson, Ariz., was also postponed.
Dillon later blamed "fatigue and exhaustion" as the cause in a post on his web site.
NINE INCH NAILS are scheduled to perform at E Center in West Valley City, Utah tonight (Oct. 4). Although there is official word yet regarding Dillon's current status with the group, Spin magazine is reporting that Jerome will be sitting out the rest of the tour — presumably to be temporarily replaced by Freese.

After a two-show run with A PERFECT CIRCLE's Josh Freese, NINE INCH NAILS have recruited Australian drummer Alex Carapetis (more information) to take over the drumming duties for the band beginning with the Chicago show on Friday (October 7).
Commented NIN mainman Trent Reznor in an online posting, "Josh Freese helped us out by playing the Salt Lake City and Denver shows as a substitute, while Alex Carapetis took over tonight in Chicago. We played the set with Alex for the first time at midnight the night before... not exactly how I like to do things but the only other alternative was to cancel more shows and I am NOT going to do that. I can't begin to tell you what a difficult job it is to replace your drummer in this band, and these guys have truly risen to the high-pressure situation that it is."

MJI Interactive is reporting that NINE INCH NAILS mastermind Trent Reznor is "pretty aggravated" by the upcoming no-frills reissue of his band's seminal 1989 debut, "Pretty Hate Machine", because the Rykodisc label was unwilling to pony up the funds to produce a deluxe edition of the album.
"I like Rykodisc, I think they are a good label, and I respect them. But the way that it happened is mind-blowing," Reznor told the Toronto Sun. "TVT's been a thorn in my side from the beginning. TVT defaulted on a huge loan and one of their assets is my first album. There's an auction and the next thing I know it's on Rykodisc.
"Now I've got Ryko asking me if I'd like to do a deluxe version. Yeah, I would. I would like to have a 5.1 version. I'll do extra songs. I'll redo the packaging. Everything. But I'm not doing it for free. They're not willing to pay, so they put out whatever they put out. That's that."
The "Pretty Hate Machine" reissue is scheduled to arrive November 22 through Rykodisc. The re-release will feature the same 10 tracks as the original, and the artwork remains unchanged, according to MTV.com. Rykodisc is licensing the rights to the record from Prudential Securities, which had put "Pretty Hate Machine", along with several other TVT Records titles, on the auction block in mid-August; the label presented a bulk of its industrial catalog to Prudential in 1999 as collateral against a $32 million loan. When it failed to attract a credible bid for the material, Prudential opted to hold onto the records' rights and license them out.

NINE INCH NAILS To Begin Mixing New Album In January
NINE INCH NAILS mastermind Trent Reznor has posted the following message on the band's official web site:
"Is it possible I am actually finished writing and recording a new NINE INCH NAILS record? Apparently so. We begin mixing in January!
"Juggling fifteen all-new tracks around. Testing sequences. No leftovers from 'With Teeth'. Highly conceptual. Quite noisy. Fucking cool."
The next NINE INCH NAILS album will follow 2005's "With Teeth", which was the group's first collection of new material in six years.

NINE INCH NAILS Mainman On New CD: 'This Is Not A Particularly Friendly Record'
NINE INCH NAILS mastermind Trent Reznor has revealed more information about the group's upcoming album, tentatively due in early 2007. In a December 27, 2006 blog entry on the official NIN fan club web site The Spiral, Reznor writes, "Usually when I finish a record, I have to go into battle with the people whose job is to figure out how to sell the record. The only time that didn't happen was 'With Teeth'. This time, however, I'm expecting an epic struggle. This is not a particularly friendly record and it certainly doesn't sound like anything else out there right now. Artists these days are not encouraged to experiment or take risks, and my punishment is on its way.
"Feeling physically run-down and emotionally insecure at this moment, and baffled as to why I feel the need to share this with you!"
The next NINE INCH NAILS album will follow 2005's "With Teeth", which was the group's first collection of new material in six years.

NINE INCH NAILS Mainman On New CD: 'I Wrote The Soundtrack To A Movie That Doesn't Exist'
U.K.'s Kerrang! magazine (web site) has conducted an exclusive interview with NINE INCH NAILS mainman Trent Reznor about the group's follow-up to 2005's "With Teeth", tentatively due this spring. A brief question-and-answer session follows:
Kerrang!: Your last album took six years. We've only had to wait 18 months for this one.
Trent Reznor: "It's been pretty interesting, I'm probably as surprised as some fans are (laughs). But really it's just a matter of discipline. When I was on the last tour, to keep myself busy I was just really hunkered down and was working on music the whole time, so this kept me in a creative mode and when I finished the tour I felt like I wasn't tired and wanted to keep at it."
Kerrang!: Is there anyone else playing on the album?
Trent Reznor: "It's all me, mostly recorded in hotel rooms around the world on laptops. There maybe some surprise vocalists that pop up here and there — although I don't want to say who since the final mix hasn't been determined yet, and Josh Freese is playing the drums on one song, but it's not like a big guest star-type record. It feels a bit more focused in a certain direction than 'With Teeth' did."
Kerrang!: What's the concept?
Trent Reznor: "I'm trying to avoid getting too detailed about this but I will tell you that this is a concept record, and it's part of a bigger picture of a number of things I'm working on. Essentially I wrote the soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist. This album is a bit more electronic and I'd say rhyme plays a bigger element in it than in the past and it's veering away from concern about song structure and getting played on the radio."
Kerrang!: Are you talking about some kind of multimedia event?
Trent Reznor: "My goal is that the music can be interpreted with the richest context. So what I'm immersed in is a way to achieve that. Now that albums have gone from 12 inches of real estate with artwork and a whole aesthetic, to CDs, which are ugly and disposable, to nowadays just being a file on a computer, it's led me to putting a lot of thought in to ways to present music that still makes it feel important and that has depth and purpose."
Kerrang!: Will it be a heavy album?
Trent Reznor: "It's not heavy in any kind of metal tyoe sense, I'd say a big inspiration sonically would be early PUBLIC ENEMY records, a collage of sound type of thing, not heavy in a metal guitar kind of way."
Kerrang!: On "The Downward Spiral" and "The Fragile" you blended together an extreme amount of disparate sounds and layers — is this moving further in that direction?
Trent Reznor: "Well Alan Moulder (long-time collaborator) was stunned when he first heard it. Normally a ProTools session has alot of tracks and this time he was like, 'You're kidding me, it's only this much stuff?' The end result has a bit of racket to it — it's much more improvisational, less refined. With this record I feel a lot less concerned about what people think about it — especially the dying record industry. I couldn't care less about that right now."

NINE INCH NAILS has set "Year Zero" as the title of its new album, which is due out in April and follows up 2005's "With Teeth". "It could be about the end of the world," the band's mastermind Trent Reznor wrote on the official NIN fan club web site The Spiral.

NINE INCH NAILS Mainman: Do Not Expect PUBLIC ENEMY's FLAVOR FLAV To Appear On New CD
NINE INCH NAILS is currently mixing its new album, "Year Zero", for an April release. In a January 11, 2007 posting on on the official NIN fan club web site The Spiral, the band's mastermind Trent Reznor wrote, "While mixing, I spend most of my time NOT in the control room to allow myself some objectivity when it comes time to listen to the progress of a track. During that time, I'm working on the new set list, tour production, thinking about tracks that aren't being mixed yet, working on a few things NIN-related I can't tell you about yet, finishing Saul's record, and occasionally checking in on you people online.
"Let me clear a few things up so some of you don't kill yourselves (or maybe you now will). This is not a fucking hip hop record, for fuck's sake. I imagine my referring to old PUBLIC ENEMY records as an influence and the fact I'm working with Saul sparked that. To clarify what I meant by being influenced by PUBLIC ENEMY: HANK SHOCKLEE's 'Bomb Squad' had a unique and highly influential way of constructing tracks — layers of samples and loops that combined together to form something chaotic and new. Do not expect Flavor Flav to appear here.
"While we're at it, I wouldn't consider Saul's record to be labeled hip hop either. Certainly there is an influence there but his record reaches far beyond the confines of what I consider a dying genre.
"As far as the sound and content of my new record, you'll see and hear soon enough. I am certain some of you will HATE it. I am also certain some of you will find it the best thing I've ever done. It is different in a number of ways and it is who I am now.
"I am creating right now and I do not care what the record label or marketing people think about what I'm doing. I also do not care what the public think about what I'm doing. I certainly appreciate your patronage — and I HOPE you will get and enjoy what I'm working on, but I will not patronize you or pander to what you want. I assure you I am pouring every ounce of my life, heart and soul into this and it will be the best work I am capable of — and that's all I can do."
In a recent interview with England's Kerrang! magazine, Reznor described the upcoming album's as "a collage of sound type of thing, not heavy in a metal guitar kind of way." He added, "With this record I feel a lot less concerned about what people think about it — especially the dying record industry. I couldn't care less about that right now." Reznor also revealed that the new effort is a concept album and "part of a bigger picture of a number of things I'm working on. Essentially I wrote the soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist."
Reznor said that most of the album was recorded "in hotel rooms around the world on laptops," with very few musicians beside himself and "maybe some surprise vocalists that pop up here and there."
When asked why the new record took less than two years to arrive when the last one took six, Reznor said, "I'm probably as surprised as some fans are (laughs). But really it's just a matter of discipline. When I was on the last tour, to keep myself busy I was just really hunkered down and was working on music the whole time, so this kept me in a creative mode and when I finished the tour I felt like I wasn't tired and wanted to keep at it."
NINE INCH NAILS will release a DVD called "Beside You In Time" on February 27. The disc documents the band's tour in support of "With Teeth".

The disc documents the band's tour in support of 2005's "With Teeth".

NINE INCH NAILS Setting Up Web Sites Around Album
NINE INCH NAILS has enlisted a company called 42 Entertainment to create a series of web sites as part of the marketing campaign for the band's upcoming album, "Year Zero". According to online reports, the sites were discovered by fans who noticed that certain letters were highlighted on the band of a NINE INCH NAILS T-shirt on sale on the group's current European tour. The sites seem to tell the story of a future society, although full details have yet to emerge. NINE INCH NAILS frontman Trent Reznor recently described "Year Zero" as "the soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist."
Some of the sites that have been created include iamtryingtobelieve.com, bethehammer.net, anotherversionofthetruth.com and 105theairbornecrusaders.com.
