New NINE INCH NAILS Track 'Leaks'
Launch Radio Networks reports: A new NINE INCH NAILS song called "My Violent Heart" has supposedly leaked onto the Internet. But according to various NINE INCH NAILS fan sites, the leak may have been intentional. The song was apparently discovered on a computer drive left in a bathroom at a venue in Lisbon, Portugal where NINE INCH NAILS just played. The drive itself reportedly contained data linking it to Iamtryingtobelieve.com, one of several web sites that tie into the main concept behind the new NINE INCH NAILS album, "Year Zero".
It's rumored that several more drives featuring the song have been found at other stops on NINE INCH NAILS' current European tour.
The web sites, which also include ChurchOfPlano.com and Bethehammer.net, present a future society in which an extremist Christian government is putting drugs into the United States' water supply to keep the populace sedated as it wages a nuclear war against the Muslim world.
NINE INCH NAILS frontman Trent Reznor said in a statement that the idea for "Year Zero" came into him in a daydream about the end of the world. He explained, "It takes place about 15 years in the future. Things are not good. If you imagine a world where greed and power continue to run their likely course, you'll have an idea of the backdrop. The world has reached the breaking point — politically, spiritually and ecologically."
Reznor also hinted that "Year Zero" would be the first of two concept albums.
"Year Zero" comes out on April 17. The first official single, "Survivalism", will arrive at radio later this month.

NINE INCH NAILS Frontman Blasts BUSH Administration
NINE INCH NAILS frontman Trent Reznor told Gigwise.com that the concept behind his upcoming "Year Zero" album was partially inspired by his feelings toward the Bush administration. Reznor explained, "I really wanted to focus on something that was at the forefront of my consciousness which is, as an American, I'm appalled by the behavior of our government, the direction that it has taken and the direction that it's taken everyone else in the world and its arrogance. I decided to write an essay about where the world might be if we continue down the path that we're on with a neo-con-esque government doing whatever it pleases."
"Year Zero" is set 15 years in the future, when a totalitarian right-wing government has taken over the U.S. and is possibly putting drugs in the water supply to sedate the populace while it wages religious war. Reznor added, "There are no concepts in the story that aren't rooted in things that already are happening."
Reznor previously expressed his unhappiness with the current government in "The Hand That Feeds" from 2005's "With Teeth".
"Year Zero", which is reportedly the first of two concept albums, is due out on April 17.

RIAA Goes After NINE INCH NAILS Fans Over Deliberate Leak Campaign
Launch Radio Networks reports: The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), which has become notorious for suing anyone from high school students to retirees for downloading music from the web, has gone after web sites such as Idolator that have posted leaked songs from the upcoming NINE INCH NAILS album, "Year Zero". The problem, however, is that the tracks were leaked intentionally. Several songs from the album were left on computer hard drives at venues on the band's current European tour, with fans finding and posting them on the web for others to download and swap. According to Billboard.com, the RIAA sent cease-and-desist emails to web sites that posted the tracks, leading one industry source to say, "These f***ing idiots are going after a campaign that the label signed off on."
While a number of songs have been intentionally released, the entire NINE INCH NAILS album has not leaked online yet. The CD arrives on April 17.
In addition to the leaked tracks, the marketing campaign for "Year Zero" has featured cryptic messages on T-shirts and a maze of linked web sites that expand upon the album's storyline of a future U.S. on the brink of apocalypse.
The same source told Billboard that NINE INCH NAILS frontman Trent Reznor views the campaign as a "new entertainment form." The source added that the campaign will continue for the next 18 months.
"Year Zero" is reportedly the first of two concept albums, the second of which Reznor hopes to finish next year.
NINE INCH NAILS finishes its European tour on April 10 in Finland and has just announced another round of shows on that continent beginning in August. A trip to Australia and Japan is planned for May. North American dates have not been announced yet.

Ok--so I checked it out and truth be told its kind of crappy w/hardly any guitars and way too technoed out. When Trent said he recorded it all in hotel rooms and laptops, he wasn't joking because it obviously sounds like it. Maybe over time this stuff would grow on the listener, but at this point I really don't feel like hearing this again.
If I have time between reviewing power metal and death metal albums, I'll post a full review on the site.

'Year Zero' Begins Today For NINE INCH NAILS Launch Radio Networks reports: NINE INCH NAILS releases "Year Zero" today (Tuesday, April 17), the band's fifth album and first conceptual effort. The 16-track album takes place in the year 2022, when the U.S. has been taken over by a religious dictatorship that may be putting drugs in the nation's water supply while the world nears the brink of environmental and social collapse. Civil liberties and privacy rights have been abolished, and citizens are getting frightening glimpses of an entity known only as "the Presence." Frontman Trent Reznor has said recently that the CD is based on his fears about the present state of the world. Reznor told Launch that music has always been the best way for him to express his emotions. "In my early 20s, when I first started to write music, it was because I found a way to take this anger or pain or resentment or sadness and express it in a way other than punching a wall, that had some beauty to it," he said. "And then later found out, if I put it to music, there's real power here and there's kind of a truthful honesty or something that people that have heard it seem to relate to." "Year Zero" has been the subject of one of the year's most talked-about marketing campaigns. Several songs from the CD were left on computer hard drives at venues on the band's recent European tour, with fans finding them and posting them on the Web. The campaign also featured cryptic messages on T-shirts and a maze of disturbing, linked web sites that expanded upon the album's apocalyptic storyline. A source recently told Billboard that the campaign will continue for the next 18 months, with "Year Zero" reportedly the first of two concept albums. NINE INCH NAILS recently announced another round of European shows for August, with a trip to Australia and Japan planned for May. North American dates have not been announced yet.

NINE INCH NAILS Frontman Says His Record Company Is Run By 'Thieves'
Australia's Herald Sun recently conducted an interview with NINE INCH NAILS mainman Trent Reznor. A few excerpts from the chat follow:
Herald Sun: It must be an odd time then to have a new album, "Year Zero", out?
Trent: It's a very odd time to be a musician on a major label, because there's so much resentment towards the record industry that it's hard to position yourself in a place with the fans where you don't look like a greedy asshole. But at the same time, when our record came out I was disappointed at the number of people that actually bought it. If this had been 10 years ago I would think "Well, not that many people are into it. OK, that kinda sucks. Yeah I could point fingers but the blame would be with me, maybe I'm not relevant." But on this record, I know people have it and I know it's on everybody's iPods, but the climate is such that people don't buy it because it's easier to steal it.
Herald Sun: You're a bit of a computer geek. You must have been there, too?
Trent: Oh, I understand that — I steal music too, I'm not gonna say I don't. But it's tough not to resent people for doing it when you're the guy making the music that would like to reap a benefit from that. On the other hand, you got record labels that are doing everything they can to piss people off and rip them off. I created a little issue down here because the first thing I did when I got to Sydney is I walk into HMV, the week the record's out, and I see it on the rack with a bunch of other releases. And every release I see: $21.99, $22.99, $24.99. And ours doesn't have a sticker on it. I look close and "Oh, it's $34.99." So I walk over to see our live DVD "Beside You in Time", and I see that it's also priced six, seven, eight dollars more than every other disc on there. And I can't figure out why that would be.
Herald Sun: Did you have a word to anyone?
Trent: Well, in Brisbane I end up meeting and greeting some record label people, who are pleasant enough, and one of them is a sales guy, so I say "Why is this the case?" He goes "Because your packaging is a lot more expensive". I know how much the packaging costs — it costs me, not them, it costs me 83 cents more to have a CD with the colour-changing ink on it. I'm taking the hit on that, not them. So I said "Well, it doesn't cost $10 more." "Ah, well, you're right, it doesn't. Basically it's because we know you've got a core audience that's gonna buy whatever we put out, so we can charge more for that. It's the pop stuff we have to discount to get people to buy it. True fans will pay whatever." And I just said "That's the most insulting thing I've heard. I've garnered a core audience that you feel it's OK to rip off? F--- you." That's also why you don't see any label people here, 'cos I said "F--- you people. Stay out of my f---ing show. If you wanna come, pay the ticket like anyone else. F--- you guys." They're thieves. I don't blame people for stealing music if this is the kind of s--- that they pull off.
Herald Sun: Where does that extra $10 on your album go?
Trent: That money's not going into my pocket, I can promise you that. It's just these guys who have f---ed themselves out of a job essentially, that now take it out on ripping off the public. I've got a battle where I'm trying to put out quality material that matters and I've got fans that feel it's their right to steal it and I've got a company that's so bureaucratic and clumsy and ignorant and behind the times they don't know what to do, so they rip the people off.
Herald Sun: Given all that, do you have any idea how to approach the release of your next album?
Trent: I have one record left that I owe a major label, then I will never be seen in a situation like this again. If I could do what I want right now, I would put out my next album, you could download it from my site at as high a bit-rate as you want, pay $4 through PayPal. Come see the show and buy a T-shirt if you like it. I would put out a nicely packaged merchandise piece, if you want to own a physical thing. And it would come out the day that it's done in the studio, not this "Let's wait three months" bulls---.
Herald Sun: When your U.S. label, Interscope, discovered the web-based alternate reality game (ARG) you'd built around "Year Zero", were they happy for the free marketing or angry you hadn't let them in on it?
Trent: I chose to do this on my own, at great financial expense to myself, because I knew they wouldn't understand what it is, for one. And secondly, I didn't want it coming from a place of marketing, I wanted it coming from a place that was pure to the project. It's a way to present the story and the backdrop, something I would be excited to find as a fan. I knew the minute I talked to someone at the record label about it, they would be looking at it in terms of "How can we tie this in with a mobile provider?" That's what they do. If something lent itself to that, OK, I'm not opposed to the idea of not losing a lot of money (laughs). But it would only be if it made sense. I've had to position myself as the irrational, stubborn, crazy artist. At the end of the day, I'm not out to sabotage my career, but quality matters, and integrity matters. Jumping through any hoop or taking advantage of any desperate situation that comes up just to sell a product is harmful. It is.
Herald Sun: Is the "Year Zero" ARG something labels will copy now?
Trent: Well, their response, when they saw that it did catch on like wildfire, was "Look how smart we are the way we marketed this record". That's the feedback I've gotten -- other artists who've met with that label ask 'em about it: "Yeah, you like what we did for Trent? Look what we did for Trent." They've then gone on to try to buy the company that did it to apply it to all their other acts. So, glad I could help them out. I'm sure they still don't understand what it is that we did or why it worked. But I will look forward to the BLACK EYED PEAS ARG, that should be amazing.

NINE INCH NAILS Album Headed For Television?
The Pulse of Radio (formerly Launch Radio Networks) reports: The latest NINE INCH NAILS album, "Year Zero", might be turned into a television series. Frontman and creative mastermind Trent Reznor told a U.K. newspaper that plans are underway to bring the concept disc to the airwaves, saying, "We've got a producer on board and have met with writers. We're about to pitch it to the network, so we're a couple of weeks away from meeting all of the main people, and we'll see what happens."
"Year Zero" is set in a totalitarian future America ruled by a right-wing religious dictatorship. The populace is plagued by mysterious visions, the country's drinking water might be drugged and global catastrophe is near.
Reznor said earlier in the year that he was interested in bringing the story to the screen, possibly as a movie.
The album was released this past spring after an innovative viral marketing campaign that left clues for fans online and in venues where the band had played.
NINE INCH NAILS has yet to mount a full North American tour in support of "Year Zero", although the group's web site recently added a September 18 show in Honolulu, Hawaii to its summer itinerary, which is filled through August and the first half of September with shows in Europe, the U.K., China, Israel and Southeast Asia. NIN plays on Wednesday (August 15) in Switzerland.

NINE INCH NAILS' REZNOR Slams 'Corporate' SMASHING PUMPKINS
The Pulse of Radio (formerly Launch Radio Networks) reports: NINE INCH NAILS frontman Trent Reznor slammed the reactivated SMASHING PUMPKINS on Friday (August 24), just hours before his group played directly before the PUMPKINS at the Leeds portion of the U.K.'s Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds festivals. According to NME.com, Reznor took issue with PUMPKINS founder Billy Corgan not reuniting the band's original lineup, saying, "I was never a big SMASHING PUMPKINS fan back when they were the PUMPKINS, not to shit on Billy or anything but I don't hear anything that would make me want to care. I think trying to resurrect the name SMASHING PUMPKINS... it's all a bit corporate for me."
NINE INCH NAILS was also scheduled to appear right before the PUMPKINS on Sunday night (August 26) at the Reading portion of the event.
Reznor also said that he wasn't impressed with the festival's overall lineup, adding, "I heard the lineup for another day and that sounded a lot better than the lineup on the day we are playing, so I doubt you will see me on the side of the stage for FALL OUT BOY!"
NINE INCH NAILS is touring in support of its latest record, "Year Zero", while the new PUMPKINS are promoting "Zeitgeist", the first collection of all-new material under the band's name since 2000.
Aside from Corgan, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin is the only original member of the PUMPKINS performing with the group.

TRENT REZNOR Tells Fans To 'Steal' NINE INCH NAILS MusicNINE INCH NAILS frontman Trent Reznor told fans at a concert in Sydney, Australia on Sunday (September 16) to illegally download the band's music rather than pay high prices for CDs. In video footage (available for viewing below) taken at the show and circulated widely online, Reznor says, "Last time I was here, I was doing a lot of complaining about the ridiculous prices of CDs down here...now my record label all around the world hates me, because I yelled at them, I called them out for being greedy fucking assholes. I didn't get a chance to check, has the price come down at all? I see a no, a no, a no... Has anyone seen the price come down? Okay, well, you know what that means — STEAL IT. Steal away. Steal and steal and steal some more and give it to all your friends and keep on stealing. Because one way or another these motherfuckers will get it through their head that they're ripping people off and that that's not right." Reznor also addressed fans in China, where NINE INCH NAILS albums are not legally available. He said, "As for the special situation in China...If you can find and buy our legal CDs, I express my thanks for your support. If you cannot find it, I think that downloading from the Internet is a more acceptable option than buying pirated CDs." View the rant here:www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mm6rc7hcFE

TRENT REZNOR To Begin Work On New NINE INCH NAILS Music
According to Billboard.com, NINE INCH NAILS mainman Trent Reznor is about to get busy in the studio working on the follow-up to this year's "Year Zero", a process he couldn't begin until the expiration of the band's deal with Interscope due to contractual reasons. In addition, Billboard understands Reznor, in keeping with past practices, will not decide how to actually release, market and promote the next album until the music is finished.
There will be new NINE INCH NAILS product before the end of the year, however. The remix album "Y34RZ3R0R3MIX3D" is due November 20 via Interscope and feature remakes of "Year Zero" songs by Fennesz, the Faint, Ladytron and Saul Williams, among others.
Interscope holds the rights to release a greatest hits collection at some point in the future, but it is unknown when such a project could see the light of day. It is also unclear what the fate would be of any potential NINE INCH NAILS archival releases, particularly if the material was recorded during the band's Interscope tenure.

TRENT REZNOR Mocks TVT RECORDS' Collapse
Gigwise.com reports that NINE INCH NAILS frontman Trent Reznor took a swipe at TVT Records on his web site yesterday, clearly reveling in the label's demise.
Under the title "You're gonna get yours," the post simply reads: "Not ALL news in the music industry is bad these days" with a link to a story about the collapse of TVT.
Reznor famously fell out several times with the his former label, including feuds over album producers, single releases and more pressingly the royalties from the ten-song EP "Head Like A Hole" in 1990.
In 1992, Reznor reached an agreement with TVT that he could move to another label while still paying a small amount of proceeds.
TVT officially announced that it will be filing for bankruptcy after 23 years in business yesterday.

Nine Inch Nails Surprise Fans by Web-Releasing New “Ghosts” Album
Nine Inch Nails have unleashed a new, thirty-six-song instrumental album called Ghosts I-IV, which is available for download right now. The album, recorded over a ten-week stretch last fall, is what Trent Reznor calls “a soundtrack for daydreams.” “I’ve been considering and wanting to make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn’t have made sense until this point. This collection of music is the result of working from a very visual perspective — dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture,” Reznor said on the Ghosts Web site. “I’m very pleased with the result and the ability to present it directly to you without interference.” Reznor parted ways with his Interscope in late 2007.
Much like Radiohead’s novel In Rainbows sales scheme, Ghosts I-IV is available in a multitude of different formats at different costs. For free, people who visit the Ghosts site can download nine of the thirty-six tracks (Ghosts I) as 320kbps DRM-free MP3s, as well as a forty-page PDF file full of digital extras. For five dollars, you can download all thirty-six tracks, either from the site or from the Amazon MP3 store. There are also $10 (for two CDs), $75 (hardcover book, 2 CDs, DVD) and $300 (limited edition of 2,500 set signed and numbered by Reznor) options. Ghosts I-IV’s arrival follows a cryptic post made by Reznor on February 17th on the NIN Web site that hinted that there would be a major announcement in “two weeks.”

Nine Inch Nails makes $750,000 in first few days after online album release
Mike Linksvayer, the CTO of Creative Commons, runs the numbers of Nine Inch Nails's Creative Commons download experiment and discovers that it only took the band two days to exceed the typical net from a massive-selling traditional CD release. The band sold $750,000 worth of "limited edition deluxe sets," plus an unknowable further sum from sales of the regular CDs and merch. The $300 “ultra deluxe edition” of Nine Inch Nails‘ Ghosts I-IV, limited to 2500 copies, sold out in a few days. There are some manufacturing costs, but they don’t appear to be using any precious materials. So if an artist typically makes $1.60 on a $15.99 CD sale, profit from sales of the limited edition already matches profit from a CD selling hundreds of thousands of copies. Then there are non-limited sales of a $75 merely “deluxe edition”, $10 CD, and $5 download, and whatever other products NIN comes up with around Ghosts. Ghosts I-IV is available for download at www.nin.com

In addition, an April 21 post on NINE INCH NAILS' official web site, www.nin.com, reads "2 weeks!" echoing a similarly mysterious message posted in mid-February that ultimately resulted in the release of "Ghosts I-IV".

NINE INCH NAILS: TRENT REZNOR Working On Cable Series Of 'Year Zero'
The Pulse of Radio reports that NINE INCH NAILS mainman Trent Reznor is working on a cable TV series based on his 2007 concept album, "Year Zero", according to a lengthy profile of Reznor in the Sunday edition of the New York Times. The article does not go into much detail about the project, except to say that Reznor is working on it with producer Lawrence Bender, who is Quentin Tarantino's partner and also produced the Oscar-winning Al Gore documentary "An Inconvenient Truth".
"Year Zero" takes place approximately 15 years in the future, with the U.S. a religious dictatorship and the world on the brink of environmental and social collapse. Reznor has indicated that he'd be interested in a film version of the story, and has also hinted at a recorded sequel at some point.
The rest of the Times interview, which took place at Reznor's home "on the outskirts of Beverly Hills," touches on his abandonment of the major label system, his recent online album releases, and his own struggle to reinvent himself in the age of music downloading.
At one point Reznor explains, "I don't agree that (music) should be free, but it is free, and you can either accept it or you can put your head in the sand." He also says he doesn't want to participate in the way music is marketed these days, adding, "I don't really want to be on the side of a bus or in a BlackBerry ad hawking some product that sucks just so I can get my record out."
A brand new NINE INCH NAILS album called "The Slip" was posted online last month as a free download at nin.com. The band's previous effort, "Ghosts I - IV", was issued in March in a variety of digital and physical configurations.
Reznor hinted in the Times article that more free music, and possibly new software applications, will be coming soon.
NINE INCH NAILS will begin a North American trek on July 25 at British Columbia's Pemberton Festival.
