Launch Radio Networks is reporting that DEFTONES recently spent a month writing songs in Malibu, California, and after a club tour in October to road test the material, they will start recording their fifth album with producer Bob Ezrin (KISS, JANE'S ADDICTION, PINK FLOYD). Frontman Chino Moreno recently said that he expects it to be one of DEFTONES' heaviest albums yet: "It's far more aggressive than, you know, our last few records, I'd say. I think we kinda just went in this time and just started writing, and obviously, all the stuff that came out was just way aggressive. That's what kind of made it fun. It was weird being out in Malibu, which is like a sunny place, a happy place, and we just started making some straight evil music." In addition to the new DEFTONES CD, Moreno is finishing work on the first album by his side project, TEAM SLEEP. A November release is expected, with a tour to follow in December.
DEFTONES' last album, 2003's "Deftones", debuted at No. 2 on The Billboard 200 chart with more than 167,000 copies sold during its first week of release.

DEFTONES singer Chino Moreno has spoken to MTV.com about the group's decision to embark on a month-long club tour prior to entering the studio to record their fifth studio album.
"We're just going to get used to playing as a live band again," Moreno said. "For me, the best part of being in a band is playing shows, all the raw energy. So we want to get some of these new songs worked out live. It'll be interesting."
The tour starts September 27 in San Francisco and finishes October 30 in Hartford, Connecticut. The band plans to head right from the road into producer Bob Ezrin's (KISS, JANE'S ADDICTION, PINK FLOYD) Connecticut studio.
"The tour is routed so it ends in Connecticut, and the we load our equipment into Bob's studio," Moreno said. "He produced [PINK FLOYD's] 'The Wall', so he's known for building songs. And we've been FTPing songs back and forth all along, so we're slowly constructing a record. We're building an album as opposed to just making a bunch of songs and putting them on a record."
With regards to the musical direction of the new material, Moreno said, "The songs are kind of brainy. They're more RUSH than TOOL in a way," he continued. "On our last record, we got kind of lazy by writing as few riffs as possible. This one we're writing way more riffs. We have formats where we have to write the songs down and go over them and over them again."

ABC ePrep is reporting that DEFTONES frontman Chino Moreno has been working on some beats for rap pioneer Flavor Flav. He hung out with the PUBLIC ENEMY member recently and agreed to put some sounds together for him, although there's no word yet on whether anything will come of the collaboration.
The DEFTONES are currently out on the road, tuning up as a band before they head into the studio in Connecticut with producer Bob Ezrin (KISS, JANE'S ADDICTION, PINK FLOYD) to record their next CD. Moreno said that in the past, "by the time we'd write the record and we'd go to record it, it's like we'd been off the road forever." So this time around, with the writing for the disk behind them, they want to "just warm up as a band, and [get] really tight," Chino said.

According to ABC ePrep, DEFTONES singer Chino Moreno says the folks at Maverick Records are so impressed with his side project TEAM SLEEP's new record that he expects the label to push the release of the CD back until next year. The disc was supposed to come out November 2, and was then pushed back to November 9. But Moreno says that after hearing the finished product, the label decided, "they really want to promote it," and will most likely wait until next year to release it so they'll be able to give it more attention.
"I guess they didn't expect it to be as good as it is," says Moreno, adding that he's not sure whether he should be happy the record executives are impressed, or upset that they originally didn't expect much from him.
TEAM SLEEP will tour Europe and the U.S. early next year, after the DEFTONES finish in the studio.
This album has been delayed almost as much as the new Guns N' Roses album.

DEFTONES drummer Abe Cunningham recently spoke to Rolling Stone magazine about the making of the group's new studio album with legendary producer Bob Ezrin — whose credit list includes the PINK FLOYD opus "The Wall". "At this point, we just needed to change things up," Cunningham said of the decision to switch producers for the new CD. "And this is definitely a different style. Working with him is just putting us fucking upside down. He's cracking the whip." Regarding Terry Date, who produced the band's first four albums, Cunningham said, "We love him with all our heart, and I would do another record with Terry in a hot second, but this is just what we needed now. Bob has made some amazing records — PINK FLOYD is one of my all-time favorite groups — and he's worked with such a wide variety of people." As for what the new material sounds like, Cunningham said, "I think it could be more like 'White Pony'. "It's hard to answer that when you're up inside of it. It's kind of an amoeba right now . . . [but] there's some fairly complicated stuff. There's this one song that has, like, five different tempo changes."

Launch Radio Networks is reporting that TEAM SLEEP, the side project from DEFTONES singer Chino Moreno that's been in the works for over five years, will finally release its self-titled debut album on May 10. The only recorded output by TEAM SLEEP before this was a song on the soundtrack of the 2003 film, "The Matrix Reloaded". Moreno told Launch what it is about TEAM SLEEP that has kept him involved for all this time. "I just think they're good songs, and its good people that I play with — most of them are my friends that I grew up with forever," he said. "And it's kinda like, I think when a band goes in to make their first record, it's like, you don't have anything to really live up to, other than just making songs that you like, you know what I mean? Sometimes it's aggravating to have, like, everybody else's opinion all the time, and TEAM SLEEP, it's just, we just do it and they kind of let us do what we wanna do." Meanwhile, Chino and DEFTONES entered the studio last November with legendary producer Bob Ezrin (KISS, PINK FLOYD, JANE'S ADDICTION) to begin recording their fifth studio album. There's no word yet on a release date for the disc. DEFTONES undertook a short U.S. tour last fall to road test some new material. The band's last album, a self-titled effort, came out in the spring of 2003. Muthagoose Says: Here we go again... another claim that it is being finished up. Like we said earlier in the thread... still no Chinese Democracy... still no Team Sleep.

LONG-AWAITED DEBUT FROM CHINO MORENO'S AMBIENT FIVE-PIECE
THERE'S A reason Deftones have outshone and outlasted their contemporaries and it's as much down to Chino Moreno's interest in all things musically esoteric as it is Stephen Carpenter's distinguished riffs. Five years in the making, 'Team Sleep' is the flipside to the screaming, slack-trousered demon we all know and love, though close enough to the 'The White Pony's static-drenched, heart-stopping atmospherics so as not to alienate.
This debut moves along at its own gentle pace, as guitars chime, drums spit and rumble and Moreno and his cohorts' (for Team Sleep is a five-piece band - 'Fieldy's Dreams' this ain't) obvious love of bands like Mogwai and Massive Attack shines through the many lush layers.
This is a refined trip-hop/post-rock combination, as on 'Princeton Review' or antsy, foreboding opener 'Ataraxia', a song gets under your skin and stays there. The use of a guest female singer on 'Tomb Of Liega' brings things a little close to Dido territory, but even then it's windswept, sepia-toned and near-suicidal, while 'King Diamond' is a brilliantly bizarre cut-up of sounds, hip-hop beats and subtle instrumentation. Yet for all their downbeat dynamics and sense of temperance, the band work as a counter-piece to anything the Deftones have done, 'Team Sleep' a series of mini aural orgasms that challenges perceptions and meets expectations, and where repeat listens reveal new previously secreted depths. A job deftly done, then.

DEFTONES frontman Chino Moreno has spoken to Kerrang! magazine about the band's forthcoming fifth album.
The Sacramento quintet are currently holed up in a Los Angeles studio with producer Bob Ezrin (KISS, JANE'S ADDICTION) working on the follow-up to their 2003 self-titled release. After a spell working in Carriage House in Connecticut, Moreno and his bandmates decided to head back to L.A. and redo the tracks they'd done, which may have delayed the album's progress by a few months, but, as Moreno explains, has resulted in the band being more together than they've ever been and producing their "heaviest shit" yet...
Kerrang!: How are the new songs sounding?
Chino: "The songs are kind of brainy, but it's the heaviest shit we've written. On our last record we got kind of lazy by writing as few riffs as possible, but on this one we're writing more riffs. This is defeinitely the tightest we've ever been."
Kerrang!: You started in Connecticut and then went to L.A. and started over. Why did you do that?
Chino: "It was kind of weird because we recorded so much stuff there, but then we regrouped as a band when we got back to L.A. and started re-tracking everything. It gets really cold in the winter in Connecticut, and it's kind of in the middle of fucking nowhere. At first it seemed like a really serene place, but then it got really fucking depressing, and once we got home, we were all like, 'What the fuck was that?' So we've finalized everything in our home studio where we rehearse and we hang out all day long, play all night, and it's become the kind of family thing that's always made the DEFTONES breathe as artists."
Kerrang!: Weren't you hoping to finish it by the start of the year?
Chino: "We felt so out of place in Carriage House that we didn't feel like ourselves. We were out of our element. Working with Bob Ezrin was awesome, having someone come in who had a really strong opinion on how shit should be, but I think we felt like we weren't in control of our shit. So we got home, and we were like, 'We've got to play this stuff, so we have to make it our own.' We just started playing and writing the baddest shit. Just song-wise, it's like everything started filling up, and we started working like a unit again. Steph [Carpenter, guitar] and my relationship has always been really rocky creatively, but we're at the best place we've ever been."
Kerrang!: Any songtitles you can share with us?
Chino: "I don't really want to give anything away yet, but there's 'Buffalo' and 'Diamond' and they have a concept. It's not a concept record, but every song has a themed idea to it. To be honest, the titles aren't worked out yet."
Kerrang!: A rumored album title is "Saturday Night Wrist". Is that what it's going to be called?
Chino: "I'm not really sure. We're still throwing names into the hat and no one's really said anything about that one, so I think that might be their way of saying they don't like it. The last record ended up being self-titled, but I wanted to call it 'Lovers', actually. I don't think we could have two self-titled records, though, so I'm sure we'll come up with something."
Kerrang!: What has made your relationship change then?
Chino: "Our last record could have been something more but it wasn't because we were fighting all the time. But I don't want to fight anymore, so we've started really communicating and it's much better. Communication is one of the most important things in any relationship, but especially in a musical one."
<Kerrang!: How did Bob Ezrin feel about you undoing some of his work?
Chino: "He was totally cool. Before, we weren't sure what we wanted to do, so we had someone else come in, but then we realized halfway through. If we hadn't gone back and reworked some stuff, it wouldn't have been our record, it would have been Bob Ezrin's take on the DEFTONES. We wanted it to be DEFTONES, produced by Bob Ezrin."
Kerrang!: Is it true DEFTONES are putting together a B-sides and rarities album?
Chino: "Yeah, we've got so many recordings of covers and remixes and there's loads of stuff people haven't really heard. I've got boxes of VHS tapes and there's so much fucking insane footage of crazy stage shows and wild shit. So it's going to be like a timeline from the beginning up to now. There'll be an album of B-sides and rarity songs and a DVD with it, so it's going to be really cool. 'Adrenaline' came out in September 1995, so I think we're aiming to release this around our 10th anniversary."

DEFTONES frontman Chino Moreno recently spoke to MTV.com about the self-titled debut album by his side project, TEAM SLEEP.
"It's not something I believe people have to hear," he said. "It's mainly something that was done for fun and something that I really like. It's definitely not supposed to be similar to the DEFTONES. That band is pretty aggressive and metal-based, and when we're doing a record, I have to constantly think about not being too self-indulgent and not being completely myself. But when I'm making TEAM SLEEP records, there are no guidelines, so I can go out and do whatever the hell I want."
Lyrically, Moreno wants his work with TEAM SLEEP to be as different from the DEFTONES as it is musically. "In the DEFTONES, it's all about my pain and my life, so with TEAM SLEEP I try as much as possible to step out of myself and write about other things," he explained. "Like, one song is about cults like Jonestown and Heaven's Gate, and another is about medieval castles and diamonds. I didn't want to complain anymore. I just wanted to fantasize a little bit."

DEFTONES frontman Chino Moreno recently spoke to The Boston Globe about his side project TEAM SLEEP, which has just released their debut album.
"I think people are open to new stuff," Moreno said. "Radio and the media shouldn't think that people are dumb. And [industry types] have to take a chance and not worry about losing their job if they put out something different."
TEAM SLEEP features Todd Wilkinson, Moreno's boyhood friend from Sacramento, Calif. They grew up playing guitar together, though Wilkinson veered off to become a high school teacher.
"He's super-smart," Moreno said, explaining why some of TEAM SLEEP's songs carry such lofty titles as "Princeton Review" and "Tomb of Liegia". The latter is based on an Edgar Allan Poe short story that Wilkinson brought to Moreno's attention. The rest of the group includes turntablist/programmer DJ Crook, drummer Zach Hill, and bassist Rick Verrett.
"My work in the DEFTONES is fulfilling, but I like to work with all kinds of people," said Moreno. It's also quite a change from the DEFTONES. "The DEFTONES are definitely more metal and aggressive," said Moreno. "I don't scream as much in TEAM SLEEP." Of particular interest is the eerily engaging cameo by Mary Timony on "Tomb of Liegia". Said Moreno: "I always loved Mary's voice — that droning kind of voice. I wanted her to sing on the second DEFTONES album, but I couldn't get ahold of her. But with this project, I just had to get ahold of her — and luckily, I did."
As for the DEFTONES, who were last seen on a U.S. tour in late 2004, Moreno said they've almost got a new album finished and are looking to get it out in the fall.
"I think it will be one of our biggest records," he said. "It's got the aggressive stuff that people like, but also the weird stuff that I like."

From MTV.com
Hardcore poet Moreno and his heavyweight Deftones spent the winter in Stamford, Connecticut, with producer Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, Jane's Addiction). It was there — at Ezrin's studio and abode, the Carriage House — that the band recorded some of the material that will eventually make the final cut on its fifth album.
But something was off with the Deftones while they languished in the bleak, wintry abyss in the richest per-capita state in the union.
"It sucked, dude," Moreno said. "It was the most depressing thing ever. The recording was good, and we got it done really fast. It was mostly to get all of Abe [Cunningham]'s drum tracks down, and we did some overdubs there, too. But it suuuuucked."
The Deftones started writing material in their Sacramento, California, hometown a little more than a year and a half ago, then took the fall off to allow Moreno time to work with his side project, Team Sleep. They regrouped in the relative tundra of the East Coast, but longed for warmer climes the whole time, according to Moreno. So the band packed its bags, bid Connecticut adieu and headed home just before Christmas.
"We ended up recording a bunch more songs, and we kind of compiled those with the Connecticut stuff," he said. The band revisited some of the Ezrin material and tweaked it a bit, delaying the final product ... well, a bit. "It's just like this roller coaster of sounds. There's really aggressive stuff — super-aggressive stuff — that, like, I don't think we've delved into evil sh-- like this before. And then there's really sad stuff. I don't know — it's a Deftones record. We're trying different things. Frank [Delgado, who handles keyboards and samples] is involved a lot more this time, as far as electronic stuff, and there's a lot more beat stuff going on.
"It's a pretty chaotic record," he continued. "Every time we make a Deftones record, it's taxing on your brain and body. They're hard records to make because you seriously have to outdo yourself. We want to outdo ourselves when we make a record; we don't want to make the same record twice. And we don't really have any formulas we use, so we just try different sh--. And sometimes good sh-- happens, sometimes weird sh-- happens."
The album — which will drop sometime in the fall and be followed by a tour — has not yet been named, Moreno says, although he's been flirting with Saturday Night Wrist. There still aren't any song titles pinned down, either. "That's like my favorite part to do, naming the songs after they're already kind of done," he said. "I have just a couple more weeks of work on it."
Moreno has recorded some vocal tracks, but not all of them; touring with Team Sleep — which he'll be doing until late August — has put that process on hold. When he resumes work with the Deftones this fall, the rest of Team Sleep will hit the studio again to start working on their sophomore offering. They've already written 15 songs for the release, which will be out in late 2006. Moreno also said former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha has signed to work with Team Sleep on some of their new tunes.
Deftones fans who cannot wait for their new album will take solace in the fact thatthe band is planning an album of rarities, B-sides and covers later this summer. The compilation will feature the band's take on the Smiths' "Please Please Please, Let Me Get What I Want," which has been available online for years, and a song by Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Southern rockers behind "Free Bird."
"It's stuff that we recorded over the years that a lot of people haven't heard," Moreno said. "Like, when I was 16, we did this version of 'Simple Man' by Lynyrd Skynyrd. I heard it the other day, and it was good. ... We remixed everything, and it's actually a pretty good record. I think it matches up to our last record, or even our new record, as far as the quality of it."
The comp also includes a Jawbox cover and a DVD of footage "since we started, when we were little kids jumping around," he said.
The album will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the first Deftones album, Adrenaline. "I grew up listening to all these songs [we covered], so I can hear myself in those songs," Moreno said. "I used to stand in my backyard with a broomstick, pretending like I was Morrissey."
The Deftones will seek a little help from their fans for the rarities disc and companion DVD. On the band's Web site, it's asking anyone who has taken live photos of the group to submit them for consideration as part of the artwork and packaging.

In a recent interview with the U.K.'s Kerrang! magazine, DEFTONES frontman Chino Moreno had the following to say about the band's decision to issue the set: "We've got so many recordings of covers and remixes and there's loads of stuff people haven't really heard.

From the members of Team Sleep...
"Don't think that because the record came out and we did a tour, that this band is going away.
This is the first time we've ever had this much time to work on music. We're working on new songs right now and we're planning some shows.
We don't intend to work like bands that put out records every 2-3 years and tour to support them. We've learned by trial and error(s) that we can't work in a traditional way. That's why the last record took so long!
Thanks for coming to the shows and showing us support, we had a great time on tour and can't wait to get back out. We also can't wait for you to hear the new stuff!
