DEFTONES bassist Chi Cheng and drummer Abe Cunningham recently spoke to The Sacramento Bee about their newly released "B-Sides and Rarities" album, featuring outtakes, live cuts and rare nuggets. A companion DVD houses all the band's videos and choice live moments. On "7 Words" and "Bored" videos, both filmed in Sacramento (in 1995 and 1996, respectively): Abe: "They came and shot ('7 Words') for 12 grand. It was supposed to be our electronic press kit. It turned out pretty good, so we used it as a video. (It was filmed) at the Cattle Club and all around town. It was a Sacto thing; it was cool. "'Bored' was our second video. ... We actually toured around quite a bit, around the country and parts of the world at that point. We were happy to be home. That was Chino's house, (and) Matt Erich's (downtown rehearsal studio) where we used to rehearse when we first started. After Stephen's mom's garage, we went to Matt Erich's and then throughout the years practiced there forever." Chi: "('Bored') was really, really cool. That was family and friends all over at Matt Erich's, everyone having a good time. My memory isn't so hot because I had allergies that day and I'd never taken a Benadryl. Someone gave me one ... and I thought I was going to fall asleep." On the "My Own Summer" video, featuring the DEFTONES and a bunch of sharks (1998): Abe: "That was fun as hell. We were in Antarctica ... nah, it looked like it. We were by Pyramid Lake. The sharks are real, there's a lot of them. They were man-eaters, man. ... (sheepishly) The sharks were mechanical sharks." Chi: "I fell off one of those shark cages and my dreads stunk for a week. (Director Dean Karr) got the good end of that deal. He's like, 'I need to get some more money to go to Australia and actually get footage of sharks.' He went down there for a week and a half and got no footage. So he got an extra trip." On the "Minerva" video, filmed during a sandstorm near the Salton Sea (2003): Abe: "It sucked. The video could've been so awesome, but they weren't able to edit it because the sand got in all the time codes and all the DATs. ... We had these moons that are way off in the distance, these huge spheres of light that got smashed when the winds came in. It turned into a sandstorm. It was a 22-hour shoot, and we were there the whole time." Chi: "We were out there for almost 24 hours. It was ridiculous. We got out there very early in the morning, and the wind blew sand in just about every orifice you can imagine. It was terrible. But it was a trippy video. I actually like it a lot." On the "Hexagram" video, filmed at a Southern California skate park in front of their fans (2003): Abe: "This is my favorite video of us. We've done quite a few videos that have never captured us fully, either we're not comfortable or trying to make us into something — we're hating it but still doing it. 'Hexagram' was cheap as hell to make and just captured us. It's bombastic. It was fun." Chi: "The 'Hexagram' video was dope. We went completely back to our roots." On DEFTONES' version of LYNYRD SKYNYRD's "Simple Man": Abe: "I love SKYNYRD, dude. Stephen loves SKYNYRD. Chino at the time wasn't feeling it. He knew the song and he knew who SKYNYRD was. He did three passes at the vocals and that was it. We were trying to say, 'It's got to be on there. How are we going to convince or trick him, how are we going to get this fool to say 'yes'?' "I called him up one day ... and he's like, 'Dude, have you heard 'Simple Man'?' I was like, 'Yeah, we want to put it in the record.' He's like, 'Dude, I was listening to it the other day and I started crying.' We're dads now, (so) I think it reminded him of his sons or something like that." On "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep", a CURE cover song, recorded live for MTV's "Icon": Chi: "That was harrowing. It was nerve-wracking. All the cover songs, you do them and record them, and you get feedback later. It was the most intimidating thing for (CURE frontman Robert Smith) to be sitting there. You can't tell whether he likes it. Afterward, he was so cool. It was amazing." Abe: "'Around the Fur' came out and we were reading Kerrang! (magazine) and Robert Smith had his Top Five records of the year. ('Around the Fur') was in there. We love THE CURE. We all love that band. "'Around the Fur' was coming out and we were at SIR (studios) down in L.A. They were rehearsing in the next thing over. We went over there ... we're petrified, but they're all just kicking it with beers: 'What's up, mate?' They were like the nicest people in the world." Listen to Abe Cunningham dishing about the DEFTONES' career in a podcast with The Sacramento Bee pop music critic Chris Macias at www.sacbee.com/beatnonstop.

DEFTONES are among the artists who are recording John Lennon songs to raise funds for human rights organization Amnesty International. The recordings, which will be released as downloads through Amnesty.org, will be part of Amnesty's new youth-oriented music campaign that begins in January. Other contributors include AVRIL LAVIGNE, BLACK EYED PEAS, SUM 41 and DURAN DURAN. There is no word yet on if a physical album will be distributed. Yoko Ono donated the rights to her late husband's solo tracks to Amnesty International in 2002 for the Imagine campaign, which asked children around the world to sing the 1971 peace classic. Lennon was murdered 25 years ago this Dec. 8. The first four tracks will be released Dec. 10, International Human Rights Day. They include the Black Eyed Peas’ version of “Power to the People,” The Cure’s take on “Love,” “Isolation” by Snow Patrol and “Grow Old With Me” by The Postal Service. The tracks will be available as downloads from www.amnesty.org/noise.

DEFTONES drummer Abe Cunningham has confirmed to Billboard.com that the band have finally finished recording their new album. Cunningham attributes the delay to struggles and internal acrimony, which nearly resulted in a breakup.
"I don't want to sit here and complain because these things happen to everyone," Cunningham told Billboard.com, "but if there was a VH1 'Behind the Music' special on us, it would be the perfect episode with divorces and all kinds of crap. It was just lack of communication. Thankfully, we've been reattaching our limbs."
While sessions started in earnest two years ago for the new project, which, depending on who you ask, could be released in early to late spring (Cunningham) or this summer (Maverick), it wasn't until earlier this year that the Deftones completed recording their fifth album. In describing the new material, which still needs to be mixed, Cunningham looks back for a point of reference.
"Actually, if you look at our last record, I refer to it as 'Dark Days' because that's basically what it was," Cunningham says of 2003's self-titled effort. "It's kind of an incomplete record from my viewpoint. I think it's a good record [with] a lot of good songs but the new album, from start to finish, is a very complete record and has all of the extremes that we like. I'd say it's kind of hard."
Among the many tracks being considered ifor the new album is "Beware of the Water", which the band may drop into its headlining set on the Taste of Chaos tour.

DEFTONES has set September 12 as the release date for its fifth album, the band's management has told Launch. No title has been revealed yet for the disc, which the band has been working on for the better part of two years. Drummer Abe Cunningham recently told Billboard.com that internal strife nearly broke DEFTONES apart during the making of the record, saying, "I don't want to sit here and complain because these things happen to everyone, but if there was a VH1 'Behind The Music' special on us, it would be the perfect episode."
The group originally began working on the project with legendary ALICE COOPER and PINK FLOYD producer Bob Ezrin, but replaced him with its regular producer, Terry Date.
The recording process was also halted while singer Chino Moreno toured with his side band, TEAM SLEEP.
DEFTONES are currently on the Taste Of Chaos tour with THRICE, ATREYU, STORY OF THE YEAR and others. The trek is in its final week and stops tomorrow night (Saturday, April 8) in Saskatoon, Canada.

DEFTONES: 'Hole In The Earth' Video Posted OnlineDEFTONES' video for their new single, "Hole in the Earth", has been posted online at YouTube.com. The clip was reportedly shot in New York with director Brian Lazzaro (COHEED AND CAMBRIA, MEST). www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjgCgEvtoNc"Hole in the Earth" comes off DEFTONES' new album, "Saturday Night Wrist", due on October 31 via Warner. An e-card for the CD can be accessed at this location. The group began working on the follow-up to the group's self-titled 2003 effort with producer Dan "The Automator" Nakamura, before switching to Bob Ezrin and finally finishing with Terry Date, who's been the DEFTONES' regular producer since their debut, and Shaun Lopez (THE REVOLUTION SMILE, ex-FAR) . DEFTONES guitarist Stephen Carpenter told Billboard.com that the group wasn't sweating the long wait for the new CD. "There was no specific timetable at all," Carpenter told Billboard.com. "We know how we work. We figure we do it at our own pace — sometimes fast, sometimes slow. It's definitely been slow as of late, but our agenda is no agenda, if that makes any sense. [We're] just having a good time." But Carpenter acknowledged that making "Saturday Night Wrist" was arduous and involved "working with different people in different places and dealing with forces of the unknown." Vocalist Chino Moreno recorded an album and toured with his other band, TEAM SLEEP, while the DEFTONES were making the new CD.

Deftones Plan Tour With Deadsy Before LP Drops On Halloween... and other Deftones news you can use!
It took more than three years, a handful of different studio locales and a couple of producers to bring the Deftones' fifth studio offering to life. And for the band and its fans, Halloween couldn't come soon enough. Deftones - Saturday Night Wrist (Maverick/ Reprise) Sacramento, California, rockers' Saturday Night Wrist lands in record shops — and the band's planning a 26-date U.S. headlining run starting October 26 in Oklahoma City. Deadsy, who spent much of this summer with the 'Tones on Korn's revived Family Values Tour (see "Korn Resurrect Family Values Tour With Deftones, Stone Sour"), have been tapped as the trek's openers. The Deftones plan to tour in support of the disc for the next two years.
According to frontman Chino Moreno, the Deftones didn't intend to take their time with Wrist, "but it just so happened it took that long. And it's a relief to have it done. It was a hard record to make. Every record that we make, it gets harder and harder for us, because we try not to repeat what we've done before or stick to certain formulas. And in order to do that, we have to go through a lot of trial-and-error stuff, which can be time-consuming."
Moreno said the band's fans have come to expect a certain quality from his band, so the Deftones wanted to make sure Wrist would live up to the hype (see "Why Is The New Deftones Album Taking So Long?").
"Our fans are very critical, which is the way we all are," he said. "We feel like, in anything in life, what we put into it is what we get out of it."
Fans have been getting a taste of the LP through the band's MySpace page, where the Deftones have posted a track called "Rapture" as well as "Hole in the Earth," the first single from Saturday Night Wrist, a title inspired by an injury one of Moreno's friends sustained (she was diagnosed as having "Saturday night palsy," a compression of the radial nerve that occurs when intoxicated people sleep with their arm draped over a chair or with someone sleeping on their arm).
" 'Hole in the Earth' was probably the first song I put lyrics on for the record, and the song is kind of in reference to the turmoil we were going through making the record," Moreno said. He told MTV News in April the band nearly called it quits halfway through the recording process (see "Deftones Serve Up 'Buffalo' With System Singer On New Disc"). "We almost gave up on it. It was really difficult and communication within the band wasn't that good, and I had another project," an ambient outfit called Team Sleep, "I was going to do. Between us, the bandmembers, it was a rough time, and the song addresses that."
Moreno also commented on the death of Andy Richardson, a 30-year-old man who was beaten in the mosh pit at the August 1 stop of Family Values in Atlanta. Police have charged 24-year-old Michael Scott Axley with Richardson's murder (see "Man Charged With Murder For Beating Death At Korn Concert").
"It was meaningless and sad and stupid that there are people who're that retarded and do senseless things," he said. "It was saddening to hear that someone would die at our performance. We're there to have fun and for everyone else to have fun. It's depressing. I don't think you can blame it on the music, because there are always some people who don't think before they act, and they have to bring it down for a lot of people."
Deftones tour dates, according to the band's publicist:

DEFTONES Begin Work On New CD
Gary Graff of Billboard.com reports: The DEFTONES are still rocking their latest album, "Saturday Night Wrist", around the United States. But they've already started work on its successor, too. Frontman Chino Moreno tells Billboard.com that the Sacramento, Calif.-based quintet has set up a backstage writing room where they're creating new material.
"We're going in there and playing as five of us in the room with just our instruments, no other distractions," he explains. "That's how we started out, basically, when we first started the band — us in the garage, no ProTools or anything to get us ahead of ourselves. We'd just play things over and over again, until we remembered it — that's the rawest way you can do it, and the best, I think."

DEFTONES: New Album Title Revealed
DEFTONES has set "Eros" as the title of the band's sixth studio album, tentatively due later in the year. Frontman Chino Moreno recently told UK magazine Kerrang! that the songwriting for the CD is coming along much faster than it has in the past. Moreno said, "We've certainly taken our time on the last few records but this one has happened very quickly. We got off tour and took a month off. Then we went into the studio and wrote a lot of music very quickly...The most important thing we had to do was to break our habits and change the way we've done things for the last few years."
Moreno explained that the band took much longer to come up with material in the past because "everyone was working separately. We would record our parts and then email them out without actually seeing each other...This time, we were all together and that really helped."
The band's last CD, "Saturday Night Wrist", came out in October 2006 and its creation nearly resulted in the band's demise. But Moreno said, "Our working relationship is better than it's ever been before. As a result, everything has improved -- our friendships and our lives. We're all really happy now."
As for the direction of the new record, Moreno hinted, "The songs are definitely weird...there's a lot of atmosphere and a lot of soundscaping."

DEFTONES To Enter Studio In March
DEFTONES will enter a Sacramento, California studio at the end of March with producer Terry Date (SOUNDGARDEN, PANTERA) and engineer Scott Olson (DEFTONES, UNEARTH) to begin recording its sixth studio album, "Eros", tentatively due before the end of the year. Frontman Chino Moreno recently told UK magazine Kerrang! that the songwriting for the CD is coming along much faster than it has in the past. Moreno said, "We've certainly taken our time on the last few records but this one has happened very quickly. We got off tour and took a month off. DEFTONES: To Hit The Studio This Month
DEFTONES will enter a Sacramento, California studio later this month with producer Terry Date (SOUNDGARDEN, PANTERA) and engineer Scott Olson (DEFTONES, UNEARTH) to begin recording the band's sixth studio album, "Eros", tentatively due before the end of the year.
Commented frontman Chino Moreno: "So these past few weeks have been just a little barbarous for us as we get closer to the actual recording part of this record. April 14th is our official start date. Our longtime producer Terry Date graced us with a short visit early last week to hear the songs and do some pre-production. Now it's pretty much crunch hour trying to stick with our plan to have everything written before we start tracking the drums. Hard for me to describe what this record will sound like. So far, it's shaping up to be our most unorthodox piece of work, not only sound-wise but the way a lot of the songs have come about. There is also some of that good old 'fuck you, I hope you die!' aggression I know a lot of you love and miss from us."
