HIM Frontman To Record New JAMES BOND Theme Song?
According to the Daily Star, James Bond producers have tapped HIM frontman Ville Valo to record the theme for 2008's "Casino Royale" follow-up flick.
Ville, 30, was approached by the Bond team at the BMI Awards dinner at London’s Dorchester Hotel, where he scooped a gong for his hit "Wings of a Butterfly".
A Daily Star source stated: "[Longtime 007 soundtrack writers David Arnold, 45, and Don Black, 69] were in deep conversation with Ville on the night.
"They love the song that won him an award. They think he has just the right ear to write a classic Bond hit with them." After their discussion, Ville even pulled a few suave 007 poses at his dinner table, aiming an imaginary finger gun at pals.
Former AUDIOSLAVE/SOUNDGARDEN frontman Chris Cornell was the first man since Paul McCartney to sing a James Bond theme song when he recorded his throaty, epic ode to 007, "You Know My Name", for Daniel Craig's debut turn as Bond in "Casino Royale".
"They wanted a voice that fit well with his persona," Cornell said last year. "They were looking for a singer who was unapologetically male, someone with introspection in his voice but not afraid to be masculine."
Cornell cited two of his predecessors as inspirations: McCartney, who wrote and performed the theme to "Live and Let Die" (1973), and Tom Jones, who sang the theme to "Thunderball" (1965).
"I decided that I was going to sing it like Tom Jones, in that crooning style. I wanted people to hear my voice," Cornell said. "And 'Live and Let Die' is a fantastic song. Paul McCartney wouldn't have written it if not for that movie. I [also] wanted to write a song in its own universe. I knew I'd never have it again — a big orchestra — so I wanted to have fun with it."

HIM: 'Live At The Orpheum Theatre' CD/DVD Due 5.11.08
Finnish "love metallers" HIM will release their new CD/DVD, "Digital Versatile Doom: Live at the Orpheum Theatre", on March 11 through Warner. The set was recorded/filmed at the band's November 14-15, 2007 concerts at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles.
HIM frontman Ville Valo recently spoke to Straight.com about his songwriting process. "It's very hard to sing about sunshine and ice cream and birds in fast cars . . . I'm a miserable bastard when it comes to writing music," he said. "I love melancholy music, and I love the darker aspects when it comes to, like, popular music. I've always been a big fan of [BLACK] SABBATH and all that, so obviously they've been a big influence on me, and I wanted to write music that would have a similar kind of gloomy atmosphere to it."
In 2003, HIM released an album called "Love Metal", which featured a gold "heartagram" — a cross between a heart and a pentagram — on the cover. The group has trademarked that yin-yang symbol, which Valo created the day after his 20th birthday, and has taken the "love metal" concept to heart.
"When we started out, a lot of people had a hard time deciding which category we belonged to, because we had the sort of SABBATH-y thing, but at the end of the day we're singing love songs," Ville said. "It wasn't goth and it wasn't rock and it wasn't metal–it was something in between. One of the first songs we ever played was 'Wicked Game' by CHRIS ISAAK, where we put all the really fuzzy, heavy guitars on it, so I guess love metal just sounded good. And you actually have to be a proper man to be able to say that you like love metal."

Teacher Placed On Administratove Leave For Playing HIM Music During Class
FoxCarolina.com reports that parents of some students at Excelsior Middle School said a teacher there has been playing songs about suicide and death — including HIM's "Join Me In Death" — to their children during class.
The school district said sixth-grade science teacher Karen Hipp has been placed on administrative leave while they investigate the parents' claims.
"These are sixth-graders listening to songs about committing suicide or killing others,' said one of the parents who did not want to be identified. "I found it very inappropriate."
This parent said he first heard the music after his children brought home a CD which they say has a sampling of the songs Hipp plays in class on it. His children also told him that Hipp has downloaded several of the songs for the students to take home and listen to.
One of the songs, called "Join Me In Death", is by a rock band called HIM. It has lyrics like, "We are so young. Our lives have just begun. Baby, join me in death."
Another parent said although she was upset to hear the music, she said she is relieved that the superintendent took swift action.
"When they're exposed to something like this, (the children) have mixed feelings about what's wrong and what's right," said another parent.
School officials said they are investigating the accusations against Hipp, but they said it is too early to talk about the case.
