2004-10-30 Las Vegas Show Reviewed from The Virgin MegaStore site The Church of Marilyn Manson Few of today's music icons will ever reach the artistic heights, influence and prowess of Marilyn Manson. The ever-evolving, gender-defying singer, who is inspired by a glam-Goth aesthetic, thrives on challenging the status-quo with his latest theatrical and musical expressions of sex, death, and mutilation. Currently he is taking the best of his biggest hits, his past live shows and staging Wednesday night (10/27), Manson's Against All Gods tour kicked off in (where else?) Las Vegas, with great aplomb. The tour is timed to support his recent greatest hits album, Lest We Forget: The Best of Marilyn Manson , with its surprise hit single, and insanely brilliant cover of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus". When Manson took to the stage, at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay, the crowd was upset and yelling obscenities, as many had been waiting for more than two hours for the band to play and rumors had been circulating that they might not show up at all. Then, close to 9:30pm, the dark stage curtain slowly opened as Manson, who stood silent for a moment, appeared dressed in a signature black bondage-inspired outfit. As soon as he began to sing the creepy opening track of his new release "The Love Song" (about violence and the government), followed by "Hate Anthem" (from Antichrist Superstar ), all was forgiven. Manson's latest muse and fiancé, Dita Von Teese, the famous burlesque dancer, elegantly loomed in a small, hidden room above the stage as she carefully watched his every move. Manson's shows have always been more like a Goth-rock opera (with touches of industrial effects and sounds) than a straight up concert. The music and staging are matched by his many outrageous costumes and stage make-up. But for a rock opera, you need a cast of characters. On this night, Manson was joined onstage by the band's original keyboardist, Pogo, long-time bassist Tim Skold, new guitarist Mark Chaussee, and drummer, Chris Vrenna, who is filling in for Ginger Fish (who was seriously injured in a fall from his drum kit at the VIVA Comet Awards in Germany last month). Vrenna, a powerful drummer formerly of Nine Inch Nails, fit in with ease, probably since he played on Manson's first two albums, Portrait of an American Family and Antichrist Superstar , as well has having toured alongside Manson in the Nine Inch Nails days where Manson was the opening band. Whether your favorite Manson stunts include his performance on stilts, the one where he sings from behind a pulpit invoking images of a dictator, the raining confetti, or if this was your first-ever Marilyn Manson show, you could not ignore the intensity of the hard rocking performance where fans, many of them dressed like Manson, stood and sang loudly along in reverence. In a time when our culture is bombarding us with fear rhetoric and tactics, Marilyn Manson looms large, appearing fearless at all times. Add that to his commitment to blast stereotypes in every direction, and you have someone who is feared by those who govern society. That is just one reason why those in the audience, from ages 14-44, embraced Manson's outrageous props and propositions from pretending to have sex with his microphone to crawling on the ground like a stalked animal. But it is not the admiration that motivates him. It is the act of making sure that nothing remains sacred so that all idols are destroyed (including himself), which forces people to think for themselves. This is what appears to frighten outsiders about Marilyn Manson, as he is blamed in mainstream media for everything from the tragic shootings in Columbine, CO, to kids taking drugs in the suburbs. On this night, in his latest theatrical incarnation, Manson confidently took his time ripping through tracks with his visceral vocals on the swaggering "Dope Show", the sinister, "mOBSCENE" and the covers he recreates oh-so-well ("Tainted Love", "Sweet Dreams", "Personal Jesus"). In a way, it was an affirmation that no matter who is in power, Manson will be there standing in the shadows reminding us that personal expression and not giving into other people's ideas of who we should be will always reign over authority. Isn't that what artists like Bauhaus, David Bowie and Pink Floyd have always done? -Kim Taylor October 29, 2004

Marilyn Manson (“Against All Gods” tour) with Slunt Nov. 20, 2004 930 Club Washington, D.C.
By Greg Maki
It’s hard to believe it’s been a decade since Marilyn Manson burst onto the national scene. If you had told me after I saw them open for Nine Inch Nails at the Baltimore Arena in December 1994 that 10 years later I would be going to see them live for the 11th time, well, I’d probably be lying if I said I would have believed you.
But since then, Manson has proved to be much more than “Satan’s favorite band,” as they were introduced at that show those years ago. Antichrist Superstar still stands as one of my favorite albums of all time, and each subsequent release has seen the artist continue to evolve musically and thematically.
Trends have come and gone since Manson first greeted the world, and though the fanbase may have dwindled somewhat, he’s still standing. The milestone best-of collection released earlier this year, Lest We Forget, shows an artist who has remained relevant for what equates to an eternity in today’s musical climate. The songs, though, have always been a blueprint for the live presentation. So it was with great anticipation that I attended Manson’s show Saturday night at the 930 Club, the same venue where I witnessed one of the best shows of my concert-going life (Manson in November 1996, about a month after the release of Antichrist Superstar).
New York City rockers Slunt kicked off the evening’s festivities. Fronted by Abby Gennet (you may remember her as the host of a short-lived MTV rock countdown show), the band’s official bio describes them as “a hard rock band's hard rock band. Plain and simple. Jagged around the edges and bursting with huge riffs from abrasive guitars held in place by a one-two punch of a rhythm section that recalls AC/DC in their Back In Black prime. Add to that a layer of girlie vocals full of rock star attitude, come-ons, put-downs, and plain ol' dirty talk that comes off sweet, tough, and sexy all at the same time.” The AC/DC comparison is getting a little carried away, but they did a good job warming up the crowd for Manson. I may check out their self-titled EP, which was released just last week.
Shortly after Slunt’s 30-minute set, a black curtain dropped in front of the stage while the road crew prepared for the spectacle we were about to see. During the 45-minute wait, we were treated to an eclectic mix of music, including “Rebel Rebel” and “Andy Warhol” by David Bowie, “99 Problems” by Jay-Z, “Pure Morning” by Placebo and “Hollywood” by Madonna. Now that’s scary.
Soon enough, the lights went out and the sounds of a stringed version of “Antichrist Superstar” filled the venue. Then the curtain dropped, and there was Manson, wearing a dress, swinging a small chandelier and reciting “Prelude (The Family Trip).” The band, which now features former Fight/Danzig guitarist Mark Chaussee (replacing the fired John 5) and former Nine Inch Nails drummer Chris Vrenna (pinch-hitting for the injured Ginger Fish), then tore into “The Love Song” with nearly the entire crowd pumping their fists and singing along. The band, rounded out by Tim Skold on bass and Madonna Wayne Gacy (“Pogo”) on keyboards, sounded as tight as ever as they blasted out “Irresponsible Hate Anthem,” “Disposable Teens” and “mOBSCENE.” To my surprise, the next sounds were the beginning of “Minute of Decay.” That, though, served only as the intro to “Tourniquet,” during which Manson re-emerged on stilts. After a cover of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus,” which sounded better and heavier live than on disc, Manson broke out “Get Your Gunn,” following his latest recording with one of his earliest. The song hasn’t been performed live in about six years, but has lost none of its ferocity.
“Great Big White World,” the first Mechanical Animals track of the night, was a nice change of pace, and judging by the crowd reaction, the next number, “(s)AINT,” seems to be a favorite among the newer songs. The crowd ate up a cover of Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love,” possibly the best of Manson’s covers, then “The Nobodies,” which Manson performed in a trench coat and fedora (a la “Speed of Pain” on the Mechanical Animals tours) with confetti-snow falling all around him.
The more obscure “Diary of a Dope Fiend” served as the intro for “The Dope Show,” which was followed, as usual, by “Rock Is Dead.” Then it was back to The Golden Age of Grotesque and the title track from the 2003 release (much to the delight of one Muthagoose Escobar). Time for more crowd pleasers, and the 1-2-3 punch of “Sweet Dreams,” “Lunchbox” and “The Beautiful People” delivered. The stage then went dark for a few minutes as a podium, emblazoned with the Antichrist Superstar “shock” symbol was wheeled out. Everyone knew what was to come, but the ensuing performance of “Antichrist Superstar” was no less powerful. I can’t think of a better song to end the night. The eerie “Suicide Is Painless” (the theme song from MASH!) played over the PA as the fans made their way outside.
It truly was a greatest hits show for Manson, as he broke out all the old theatrics during a set spanning his entire career. As always, the sound was crystal clear (even with earplugs). The stage provided little room for the band to move around (Chaussee barely moved an inch), but the opportunity to see the show in a venue as intimate as the 930 Club is one not to be missed. I hope at least one show on the tour is captured for a DVD.
SET LIST Intro: Antichrist Superstar (string version) 1. Prelude (The Family Trip) 2. The Love Song 3. Irresponsible Hate Anthem 4. Disposable Teens 5. mOBSCENE 6. MARILYN MANSON surprised an unsuspecting class of students Monday (Nov. 22) at Temple University in Philadelphia when he became the Professor of an Art and Society class for the day (photo), as part of MTV's "Stand-In" series. Manson's spin as a philosophy professor was the latest in a regular network feature that has included Sen. John Kerry, Snoop Dogg, and Jesse Jackson.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the students gasped when Manson — decked out in a black suit, shirt and tie, platform shoes with a chrome toe box, his trademark dark lipstick and bulbous sunglasses — entered with a small entourage.
"Oh my god, it's Marilyn Manson," one student said, and the class burst into applause.
The routine with the blackboard aside, Manson quickly established that he did not plan to be a typical substitute.
"I'm not Edward James Olmos," he said, referring to the actor who starred in the 1987 film "Stand and Deliver".
But the absinthe stayed in the bottle, and for an hour Manson led the class on a rambling but fascinating tour of his controversial political opinions and religious beliefs, as well as his definition of art and the shortcomings of the mass media.
"I'm not someone who doesn't respect religion," Manson said in response to a student question. "But I don't care for the way religion is used to manipulate people."
He said later: "We create our own gods. We create our own devils." Manson's comments were mild compared to many he made in the 1990s, when he was at his most popular and his most controversial. Religious and civic groups frequently picketed his concerts. But as he spoke with students, Manson was fairly reserved, frequently waxing appropriately philosophical.
"Art, for me, is a question mark. I don't think it should ever be an answer," he said.

MARILYN MANSON's revised "The Nobodies" music video debuted Friday on Germany's "Universal Rock Videos". The video, originally released in 2001, differs slightly from the original. In addition to subtle differences with regard to added and deleted scenes, the audio for the song itself has also been changed in certain areas. However, the most noticeable alteration is the removal of the brief instances within the video that showcased the 2001 band lineup, including ex-members Twiggy Ramirez (bass) and John 5 (guitar).
Currently, the video is available for download in its entirety via the "Universal Rock Videos" web site at Universal-Rock.de. Real player or Windows Media Player is required to play the video.
As previously reported, the official track listing for the re-release of "The Nobodies" single is as follows:
01. The Nobodies (2005 Against All Gods Remix) (by Chris Vrenna, ex-NIN) (3:37) 02. The Nobodies (Burn 36 Mix) (by Jam & Spoon) (5:42) 03. The Nobodies (Stephane K Rock Dub Mix) (4:43) 04. The Nobodies (Album Version) (3:35)

MARILYN MANSON recently told RollingStone.com that he will be releasing a set of four short films, entitled "Fantasma Gloria", through his web site. "It's the visions of Lewis Caroll — in fact I'm playing Carroll," he said. In Installment One, Manson explores the origin of "Alice in Wonderland"'s Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. "I might add that the girls playing Tweedle Dee and Dum are twins who get to have real, genuine sex with each other. I like to make dreams come true."
Manson has come to a crossroads in his career. "I no longer want to make art that other people — particularly record companies — are turning into a product," he said. "I just want to make art." And he's invented a new genre for his new breed of art: "horripilation." "It's horrifying, and it's depilatory," he explained. "It will horrify the hair off of your legs."
Manson's also got 18 songs in the can. "It's not like I'm going to stop making music and start knitting," he says. "I just don't think the world is worth putting the music into right now. First we're gonna fix the world with horripilation."

Although it's not movie related, shock rocker Marilyn Manson (who is starring in Rise), has begun his new campaign for his next album and art direction. Manson tells Rolling Stone about "horripilation", "It's horrifying, and it's depilatory," he explains. "It will horrify the hair off of your legs." But what is this art he speaks of? It's his new film career, which I'm sure we'll all be checking out down the line. You can read more inside. Anyone who is a fan of Manson also knows that when he comes out of his shell for his next album, everything he does is related- so odds are his next album will also be themed "horripilation"... Rolling Stone writes:
"The other night I took an eighty-year-old taxidermied monkey, set it on fire in the pool and filmed it from beneath with an underwater camera," says Marilyn Manson, sitting in his home in Los Angeles. "It was beautiful, like the Titanic, the Hindenburg and King Kong all mixed into one."
Manson has come to a crossroads in his career. "I no longer want to make art that other people -- particularly record companies -- are turning into a product," he says. "I just want to make art." And he's invented a new genre for his new breed of art: "horripilation." "It's horrifying, and it's depilatory," he explains. "It will horrify the hair off of your legs."
First up is Fantasma Gloria, a set of four short films to be released through his Web site. "It's the visions of Lewis Caroll -- in fact I'm playing Carroll," he says. In Installment One, Manson explores the origin of Alice in Wonderland's Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. "I might add that the girls playing Tweedle Dee and Dum are twins who get to have real, genuine sex with each other. I like to make dreams come true."
Manson is also opening an art gallery in L.A., publishing a book of paintings, planning to convert his basement wine cellar into an opium den ("I don't drink wine") and sporting a goatee for an upcoming cameo opposite Lucy Liu in Rise.
He's also got eighteen songs in the can. "It's not like I'm going to stop making music and start knitting," he says. "I just don't think the world is worth putting the music into right now. First we're gonna fix the world with horripilation."

Launch Radio Networks reports: Marilyn Manson's fiancee, burlesque performer Dita Von Teese, has told Xfm.co.uk that the couple's upcoming wedding will not involve any sort of Satanic ceremony or other bizarre rituals that could be associated with Manson's shock-rock image. Von Teese explained, "It's not going to be dark! No bats instead of doves, no black wedding gown. (But) we're hoping for snow and fog! (Manson's) very interested in the ceremony, but he's trusting my judgment on all the aesthetics."
Manson and Von Teese have not made the wedding date public as of yet. Meanwhile, Manson will release a set of four short films, entitled "Phantasmagoria: The Visions Of Lewis Carroll", through his web site. Manson says the films are part of a new art form he has invented, which he calls "horripilation." The word is a combination of "horrifying" and "depilatory," and Manson says it will "horrify the hair off your legs."
"Phantasmagoria" will be followed by a full-length feature film.
Manson also has 18 songs written for his next album, but there's no word on when the music will see the light of day.

What would a perfume dreamed up by MARILYN MANSON smell like? The world is about to find out. The shock-rocker told Women's Wear Daily at the John Galliano show Saturday (October 8) that he was planning to launch his own fragrance early next year. "I'm in the final stages with one of the major companies," said Manson, noting he was "inspired by the Dali-Schiaparelli collaborations." The flag bearer for manly makeup said he hoped his fragrance would be the precursor to a full cosmetics line. He added that he's working on a movie about author Lewis Carroll.
Regarding John Galliano's show for the British designer's summer ready-to-wear collection, Manson said, "I think he's very self-aggrandizing in a very great way. In a way that I like. . . He is someone who lives their art, especially when he puts his own image into his creations. Few people can get away with that. But he can, because he is so fantastic," said Manson, who attended the show with his fiancée Dita von Teese.
"It's not just about the clothes. It's about the whole spirit," Manson said.

From MTV News...
Everyone believed Marilyn Manson when he announced three months ago that he'd be throwing in the proverbial rock and roll towel to focus all his creative attention on film. Manson, the consummate rock star, was fibbing in a sense — but it turns out that it was all part of a much larger plan.
"The time that people aren't expecting what's going to happen, I find that's the best time to really cause the damage that needs to be done," Manson explained. "I might have had to defuse people with a smoke screen of weakness and the idea that I was going to run away from music when I was really just trying to find the bullets for my gun — metaphorically, of course. But I was contemplating giving up entirely. It's a sort of philosophy that I find to be true that if your life is collapsing around you, sometimes you have to be willing to let go."
But Manson didn't end up letting go. Instead he's been writing and recording in two different California studios with KMFDM guitarist and Manson studio bassist Tim Skold, keyboardist and drummer Pogo (Stephen Bier Jr.) and an assortment of other musicians — just who, he's not saying. Most of Manson's still-untitled sixth LP has been finished for weeks.
"I feel as if there's more like three albums' worth of material, [because] I don't want to cram a long record into a place that doesn't have the attention span for that," he said. "I'd like to return to the old-fashioned records that had eight or nine songs [that] were all very important. Not to say that I made records that had filler material. They were all based around a central idea, and the central idea in this one is my pain and its ability to be unashamed to repeat itself."
As for the musicians he's been working with, Manson said, "It's hard to call [them] a band because it's open and developing in a way where anything can happen. The songs have been ... a collaboration between Skold and myself, but we're at the point now where the people who will fulfill the positions that need to be there to make the Marilyn Manson of end times, the Marilyn Manson that, if it had to be the last form, this is the way it should be remembered — those people will stand forward and make themselves appreciated, and I feel like I've created an environment where that will happen."
While Manson's been busy with the forthcoming "Phantasmagoria," a movie he wrote and is directing that looks at the life of "Alice in Wonderland" scribe Lewis Carroll, he's put that project — which will star fashion model Lily Cole as Alice — on hold for now. He plans to resume in January, after the album, which could drop before spring, is completed.
Manson says working with Skold has renewed his passion for music. "[Skold] has turned out to be the guitar god Marilyn Manson always needed," he revealed. "His guitar playing is something that completely seduced me into liking [music] again. It was almost a naked woman to a man who's just gotten out of prison, because I felt like I was in a prison of sorts, of my own creation. I was preparing a hole for myself, really, and finding nice clothes to be buried in. Instead, the hole will make a nice place for people to wait [for] a V.I.P. party that's not going to happen, on their way to hell, and I'm just going to have a fashion show afterward."
The music, Manson said, is the "most guitar-driven" and "most original that I've heard created. This record has a very unpleasant attitude toward itself, and I expect it to be — without sounding like someone who says this every time they make a record — something above and beyond and different — sonically, emotionally — than anything I've done."
The album's lyrics, he said, were inspired by his muse, fiancee Dita Von Teese.
"They have probably the most romantic feel to them," he said. "This is a desperate and crippling desire for romance — not in the romance sense of a Reese Witherspoon movie, but in the sense of living your life like a film and enjoying it that way. I've found a woman I can relate to. That's something — and I don't even feel sappy saying it — that, if anyone has that, don't lose it, because it's probably the only thing that you can ever really find any satisfaction from."
Beyond Skold's guitars and Manson's pipes, Manson said he's been experimenting with various unconventional forms of percussion.
"We created a snare-drum sound with a bottle of painkillers," he explained. "We often get sent to the house — the wife and I — an assortment of sexual marital aids that are also very useful as percussive instruments. When hitting a rubber penis against a leather couch, I found a bass-drum sound that's unmatched by any other."
Manson also said he's launching an art movement called the Celebritarian Corporation. While he wouldn't discuss it in detail, he did allow that Celebritarian has been incubating for seven years and that "it represents the only place where art can possibly go after surrealism and Dada. There's an array of people involved — from Gottfried Helnwein, who is a fine artist, to Steven Klein, who is a fashion photographer, and Anthony Silva, a director and an editor. I've collected a group of people, and everyone has a role. I think it's probably the only valid attempt at an art movement since the surrealists. It's something that should be feared, but it's something I can't imagine not living up to its expectations.
"I can't satisfy myself with just trying to tie all of my imagination into music, especially when music is not appreciated as an art form as much as it used to be," he added. "I'm trying to take this moment in my life where I could relax and be lazy, but instead it's a full-scale attack. My goal isn't to make money, it's to try and survive and make a point. I'm at that level where there's nothing left living for except doing some damage."

MARILYN MANSON has confirmed to MTV.com that he has tentative plans to lend his name to a commercial fragrance.
"In the sense that absurdity is a wonderful form of communication — as is confusion and other things that surround it — it's very possible that [the fragrance] could happen," Manson said. "If it does happen, just know that I'll be laughing. That doesn't mean I'm not taking it seriously, but if I had to make a cologne or a fragrance, I would make something that would be for men and women."
Manson wouldn't confirm whether his hinted-at cosmetics line — something he was also asked about in the interview — is indeed a real project he's involved with ("I'm not allowed to say," he cracked), but he did say that "there are people who are very interested, and it's a matter of seeing what happens. I just really have to see what it all entails, because right now, it was just an idea proposed to me — very enthusiastically proposed. I'm open-minded."
But launching a "cosmetics line is something I've always wanted to [do], purely because I wear makeup every day. I wanted to make something of my own for myself and I thought, being that probably I'm the most thought-of male makeup wearer these days aside from TV newscasters, it just seemed like it would make people feel OK to wear lipstick if it had a man's endorsement on it. To me, makeup is just like painting. I have done so many things to my face and to my body with makeup that I feel like it's something I should be able to allow people to rely on my opinion for."

The Associated Press is reporting that Marilyn Manson married his longtime girlfriend Saturday (Dec. 3) in Ireland.
Manson, whose real name is Brian Warner, married 33-year-old Heather Sweet in front of about 60 guests at Castle Gurteen, the home of a friend in Kilsheelan, County Tipperary.
Sweet is a burlesque dancer who uses the stage name Dita Von Teese. They have been dating for four years and Manson proposed at their Los Angeles home in March 2004, People magazine reported.
Manson, 36, wore a black silk taffeta tuxedo and Von Teese was in royal purple silk taffeta with a corset. They traded vows and were married in a non-denominational ceremony conducted by underground filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky, a friend of Manson, the magazine reported.
Manson, who's completing his sixth, as-yet-untitled studio LP, told MTV News back in late October that the wedding would be small, and that just a few invites went out to celebrity friends, "because it isn't about that. I wasn't looking to just have some sort of exploit out of it — I wanted it to be meaningful and something to remember," Manson said. "But the remembering part's going to be hard, because you're supposed to get drunk."
The days following the affair, he said, would include skeet shooting, archery and falconry.
"It will be a drama within a drama," he told MTV News. "Rather than just have a best man, I have a worst man too — I had two friends, and I had hard time deciding." He said that his friends were planning to hire "the great grandchildren of [Adolf Hitler's architect] Albert Speers to light the castle" and that there would be "children in makeup, dressed in these wonderful 19th century outfits, serving absinthe frappe."

MARILYN MANSON: Project Updates...
Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll Rolling Stone magazine reports that Marilyn Manson will begin filming his movie project, "Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll", in just a few weeks in Paris, France. In addition, he will celebrate the Halloween opening of his new L.A. art gallery, located at the nearly satanic address of 667 Melrose. ("I looked at the lease and said, you have got to be kidding me," he says.) He has also been making music, including the new tune "This is Halloween" for the upcoming DVD release of Tim Burton's "Nightmare Before Christmas". "It will be the vampire national anthem," says Manson. "Black panties all across the world will moisten at the sound of my voice."
NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS TRACK... So far, he has half an album's worth of tracks, one of which, "Rebels Without Applause", addresses Manson's notion that young bands suck these days. "I'm not the bitter guy that's jealous of these other bands that are coming up and stealing my thunder," he says. "I invented thunder and rain. I am THE black. And I'm here to vacuum the red carpet."
ABSINTHE... If that's not enough, Manson is releasing his own line of absinthe. "We hope to have it out in time for parents to give it to their children for Christmas."

MARILYN MANSON: Two Songs Away From A Finished Album
MARILYN MANSON told Rolling Stone magazine at the October 31 opening of his new Hollywood art gallery, the Celebritarian Corporation Gallery of Fine Art, that heis nearly done with an album set for a 2007 release. "The process of opening a gallery ended up inspiring me to make a new record," he said. "We're about two songs away from a finished album that we didn't even have a few months ago. It sounds rather pretentious sometimes, but it's easier for me to just call myself an artist — if I decide to do music or if I decide to do a film, it works. I just want to uphold a level of integrity."
